A Brief History

Caldwell Academy was established in 1994 by an organization of families in Greensboro, North Carolina, who sought to create a school for their children that would teach from a Christian perspective. The school is named after David Caldwell (1725-1824), an early minister in Guilford County, educator, and physician. David Caldwell founded a Log-College. The academy opened in the fall of 1995 with a few hundred students, initially operating out of rented space at a local church. In the summer of 1999, the school moved to its permanent location, which originally consisted of "Founders Hall," the "Smith Building," and some modular structures. A new grammar building, "Munchkin Hall," was constructed in the summer of 2007, and K-5 students were moved to this new facility.

Educational Structure

Caldwell Academy is a Preschool-12 Christian, classical school with 576 students located on a 59-acre campus in northwest Greensboro. The academy is divided into four divisions:

Preschool
Grammar School (K-5): In a classical school, the instructional goal for grammar school students is mastery of the fundamental facts and rules of each subject. The students are to accumulate a broad core knowledge. Preschool through fifth grade comprise the Lower (Grammar) School. Learning is a simple task as God created children at this age naturally curious.
Dialectic School (6-8): Our Middle (Dialectic) School is comprised of students in sixth through eighth grades. The focus during these years is to introduce dialogue, discourse, and logic as students apply and analyze knowledge.
Rhetoric School (9-12): Students in grades 9-12 make up our Upper (Rhetoric) School. We prepare them to be persuasive, and confident communicators equipped to defend the truth in a relativistic society.

Tuition Payment Plans

Caldwell Academy offers flexibility in tuition payment options:

One-time lump sum payment
Bi-annual payments in June and December
Scheduled monthly drafts over 11 months, from June to April

Comprehensive Fee

The comprehensive fee is charged each Fall and Spring only supports the many services that are provided to all of our students. Some of these services include but are not limited to academic support services, parking and security, library services, student activities and cultural events, the wellness center, fitness center activities and online services. The comprehensive fee is exclusive of course and special fees required for certain courses. Some courses you may take will have a course or lab fee that is assessed along with tuition for the course and is related to certifications, supplies, or other provisions that will be required to complete the course. Participation in Commencement ceremonies is not required, however, all students who have completed their degree requirements and cleared as a graduate (Dec, May, Aug) are charged this fee ($325). Though this fee in part supports provision of Commencement events for all graduating students whether they choose to attend or not. There are also activities outside of Commencement events involved with conferring a degree on a student such as their Degree Audit to confirm completion of degree requirements, a certified Diploma, and officially becoming a member of the Alumni of Caldwell University.

Financial Aid and Affordability

Caldwell Academy recognizes that the decision to pursue a private education often hinges on affordability. To address this, the academy offers several financial aid options.

Need-Based Tuition Assistance

Caldwell's tuition assistance is need-based. We understand that for some families, the decision to pursue a private education comes down to a question of affordability. We do not want finances to be the obstacle that prevents a family from enrolling their child and want to work toward making it accessible to mission-aligned families. We offer discounted tuition based on financial need. All applications are reviewed by a small Tuition Assistance Committee with care and confidentiality. Awards are granted as a percentage of tuition.

Application Process

Anyone who is concerned that they may not be able to afford a Caldwell education for their children should apply. Applying does not guarantee qualifying. Current families are notified of their grant decisions in early April and are granted an extension to the re-enrollment deadline of February 1. If a current family is also applying for admission of a sibling, a pending grant amount will be shared along with the grant information for the re-enrolling student. Families in Tiers 3 and 4 must provide information from your 2025 tax return. This is listed on the Application Form.

Caldwell Academy is a college preparatory school. Caldwell Academy is offering 5 AP courses. In 2015, some students attended University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Davidson College, Clemson University, Baylor University and University of Alabama.
