Cam Akers: From High School Prodigy to NFL Champion

Cam Akers, born on June 22, 1999, is an American professional football running back who most recently played for the Seattle Seahawks of the National Football League (NFL). His journey to the professional ranks was paved with remarkable achievements in high school and college, followed by a Super Bowl victory early in his NFL career.

Early Years and High School Dominance

Akers attended Clinton High School in Clinton, Mississippi, where he showcased his versatility as both a quarterback and a running back. During his senior year, he rushed for an impressive 2,105 yards and 34 touchdowns, while also passing for 3,128 yards and 31 touchdowns. His outstanding performance earned him numerous accolades, including being named the 2016-2017 Mississippi Football Player of the Year and the U.S. Army Player of the Year.

College Career at Florida State

2017 Season: Freshman Phenom

Akers committed to Florida State University as a highly touted recruit. He made his college debut against Alabama in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game, rushing for 30 yards on 10 attempts. His first 100-yard game came against Miami (FL), where he rushed for 129 yards on 14 carries. A week later, against Duke, Akers scored his first college touchdown on a 46-yard run. He continued to impress, rushing for 199 yards on 22 carries and two touchdowns against Syracuse. In the final regular season game against Louisiana-Monroe, Akers rushed for 117 yards on 19 carries and two touchdowns. By the end of the 2017 season, Akers had accumulated 1,025 rushing yards on 194 attempts, along with seven touchdowns. He also contributed 16 receptions for 116 yards and a touchdown. Akers's stellar freshman season earned him a spot on the All-ACC team.

2018 Season: Continued Success

Akers continued to be a key player for Florida State in the 2018 season. In the second game against Louisiana-Monroe, he rushed for 193 yards on 36 carries and two touchdowns, while also adding five receptions for 55 yards and a touchdown. His 36 carries in that game set a program record. Against Louisville, Akers had 112 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns. He followed that up with 157 rushing yards and a touchdown against Wake Forest, along with four receptions for 42 yards and another touchdown. A week later against Syracuse, Akers had 20 carries for 144 yards and four touchdowns.

2019 Season: A Strong Finish

Akers's junior season proved to be his best. He showcased his complete skill set by rushing for 1,144 yards and 14 touchdowns, and adding 30 receptions for 225 yards and four receiving touchdowns. On December 14, 2019, Akers announced that he would forgo the Sun Bowl and enter the 2020 NFL Draft. He finished his college career tied for seventh in single-season touchdown carries with 14 and seventh in career rushing touchdowns with 27.

NFL Career

Los Angeles Rams (2020-2023)

Akers was selected by the Los Angeles Rams in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. In Week 11 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Akers scored his first career touchdown on a four-yard reception. In Week 14 against the New England Patriots, Akers rushed for 171 yards on 29 attempts. On July 20, 2021, Akers tore his Achilles tendon. He was placed on the reserve/non-football injury list to start the season.Akers began the season as the Rams' starting running back in Week 1 at the Seahawks. He carried the ball 22 times for 29 yards and scored on a 1-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter of Los Angeles's 30-13 season-opening win. On September 21, 2023, the Rams traded Akers and a conditional 2026 seventh-round draft pick to the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for a conditional 2026 sixth-round pick.

Minnesota Vikings (2023)

Akers was traded to the Minnesota Vikings during the 2023 season. In his Vikings debut against the Carolina Panthers, Akers rushed for 40 yards on five attempts as well as two catches for 11 yards. Later that season, he suffered another Achilles injury, prematurely ending his time with the Vikings.

Seattle Seahawks (2025)

On November 26, 2025, Akers signed with the Seattle Seahawks. He was waived on December 11, but signed with their practice squad two days later. The Seahawks went on to win Super Bowl LX over the New England Patriots, giving Akers his second Super Bowl championship.
