Yanmega and the Enigma of "Fly": A Pokémon Analysis
Yanmega, the Bug/Flying-type Pokémon, presents an interesting case study when considering its potential to learn the move "Fly." While possessing wings and the Flying type, Yanmega's inability to learn "Fly" raises questions about the criteria Pokémon must meet to utilize this move. This article delves into the complexities surrounding Yanmega and "Fly," examining the potential reasons behind this exclusion and exploring similar inconsistencies within the Pokémon world.
Yanmega's Capabilities
Yanmega is a dual-type Bug/Flying Pokémon. This six-legged Pokémon is easily capable of transporting an adult in flight. Its jaw power is incredible. With a base Speed of 95 and the ability Speed Boost, Yanmega can become a formidable special attacker. The ranges shown are for a level 100 Pokémon.
Move Acquisition in Scarlet & Violet
In Pokémon Scarlet & Violet, Yanmega learns moves through leveling up and the Remember Moves feature. However, it does not learn any moves by breeding. In Pokémon Legends: Z-A, Yanmega does not learn any level up moves or TM moves.
The "Fly" Conundrum
Having wings and being a Flying-type does not automatically qualify a Pokémon to learn the move "Fly". There appear to be additional, unstated requirements, particularly for Bug-type Pokémon. Of the numerous Bug/Flying Pokémon, only a select few can learn "Fly": Volcarona, Genesect, and Vikavolt.
Volcarona: While not a Legendary Pokémon, Volcarona was considered a deity in ancient times, possibly contributing to its ability to learn "Fly."

Genesect: This Pokémon can learn "Fly" via artificial enhancements, implying that technology can bridge the gap for Pokémon that might not naturally possess the capability.
Vikavolt: Despite not being a Flying type, Vikavolt has Levitate, which may be related to its ability to learn Fly.
Notably, no Bug/Flying-type Pokémon can learn "Fly." One theory suggests that most Bug-types may not be able to soar high enough, breathe at those altitudes, or withstand the forces exerted on their exoskeletons during flight.
Yanmega's Case
While some believe Yanmega is as capable as Vikavolt, it cannot learn "Fly." This suggests that there are other factors at play beyond mere wings and the Flying type.
Inconsistencies in Pokémon Logic
The Pokémon world is rife with inconsistencies that challenge our understanding of how certain Pokémon can perform specific feats.

Doduo's Flight
Doduo, a flightless bird Pokémon, can somehow learn to fly. According to Pokémon Snap, "It can jump so high with its powerful legs, it may as well be flying!". It's essentially so good at jumping it can "fly" (or fall with style).
Surf and Unexpected Pokémon
Many Dragon-type Pokémon can learn Surf, which is not particularly strange. However, several Pokémon who aren’t Dragon or Water types can also learn Surf. It has been suggested that Pokémon in the Monster breeding group might often be able to use Surf as a reference to kaijus causing natural disasters such as tsunamis.
Cobalion and Volt Switch

Virizion and Sunny Day

Nihilego's Rock Moves
Nihilego learns Rock Slide and Rock Tomb but not Stone Edge or Rock Blast.
Emboar and Scald
Emboar can learn Scald, a Water-type move.
Vikavolt's Speed
Vikavolt, despite being described as very fast in the Pokédex, has a base speed of 43. This discrepancy highlights the frequent disconnect between Pokédex entries and in-game stats.

Kyogre doesn't get Torrent.
