Admissions Criteria and Application Process

Applying to Capella University involves meeting specific admissions criteria, which may vary depending on the chosen degree program or certificate. However, certain requirements are universal across all programs.

Core Requirements

All Capella applicants must:

  • Provide a valid, government-issued photo identification.
  • Provide copies of official transcripts from previous institutions for relevant coursework.
  • Each program has specific minimum GPA requirements for admission.
  • Agree to abide by Capella policies and program requirements.
  • All applicants must understand, read, speak and write fluently in English.

Notably, Capella University does not require applicants to submit scores from the GRE, GMAT, SAT, or ACT.

Additional Requirements for Specific Programs

Certain degree programs, particularly those in counseling, social work, and nursing, may have additional admission requirements. International students also face specific requirements, including providing proof of English proficiency and transcript evaluation. It is advisable to consult the program page or an enrollment specialist for detailed information on these additional requirements.

The Application Process: A Step-by-Step Guide

Capella University aims to make the application process as straightforward as possible. Here's a step-by-step guide:

  1. Create or Log In to Your Account: This account allows you to save your progress, resume your application later, check your application status, or start a new application.
  2. Enter Your Contact Information: Provide your contact information and Social Security number, which is required for federal reporting and financial aid purposes. Capella University ensures the security and confidentiality of this information.
  3. Provide Transcripts: Submit transcripts from all previous universities, including military institutions and other providers like Sophia or StraighterLine. With your permission, Capella can request these transcripts on your behalf. Once received, eligible transfer credits will be applied to your program.
  4. Provide Additional Materials (If Required): Depending on your chosen program, you may need to submit additional materials, such as letters of recommendation, your resume, licensure information, or assessments.

Capella University does not charge an application fee, nor are there hidden fees for transcript requests or transfer credit evaluations. You can expect to receive an admission decision within two weeks of submitting your complete application. Upon acceptance and enrollment, it is recommended to create a financing plan and familiarize yourself with the online campus.

Credit for Prior Learning (CPL): Leveraging Your Experience

Capella University recognizes that learning extends beyond the traditional classroom setting. Through its Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) program, students can potentially earn college credit for knowledge and skills acquired through various experiences, such as formal and informal work training, continuing education, self-instruction, and professional certifications.

How CPL Works

CPL allows students to document their existing knowledge and skills through written assessments or the evaluation of specific credentials. This process aligns with the CAEL Standards, ensuring that credit is awarded only for demonstrated college-level learning.

CPL Application Steps

There are two primary methods for applying for CPL:

  1. Documented Credit: This involves submitting required documentation for specific industry certifications. Capella University will then apply credit as applicable to your degree program. An additional fee of $50 is assessed each quarter you request documented credit, with maximum exclusions and conditions applying.
  2. Credit for Prior Learning Petition: This method requires you to describe how you've mastered the concepts of a specific course and how you apply that knowledge. The credit for prior learning lab can be used to develop your petition(s). A Capella faculty expert will review the petition to determine if credit should be awarded.

Eligible Programs

CPL is accepted in a variety of bachelor’s and master’s degree programs. However, select areas of study may require coursework that aligns more directly with certification and professional training. Your enrollment specialist can provide guidance on the options available for each program.

CPL and Your Transcript

Whether earned through documented credit or the faculty-assisted petition process, your CPL credits will appear on your official transcripts. The course requirements completed via CPL and their equivalent credit amount will also be available, officially documenting your mastery of course material. Note that credit for prior learning petitions are available only to current GuidedPath students who meet the requirements, while documented credit can be applied once you’re admitted.

Transfer Credit Evaluation: Maximizing Your Previous Coursework

Capella University simplifies the process of obtaining official transcripts by allowing applicants to grant permission for Capella to request transcripts from other schools on their behalf. Once received, Capella evaluates your previous coursework based on its applicability to degree requirements, grades earned, and how closely the course matches Capella's courses in terms of department, title, level, credits, and description of course content. Courses without a direct Capella match may be evaluated as electives in programs that include electives. Degree levels and programs have maximum transfer credit limits.

Learning Formats: GuidedPath and FlexPath

Capella University offers two distinct learning formats: GuidedPath and FlexPath. These formats cater to different learning styles and preferences, providing students with the flexibility to choose the option that best suits their needs.

GuidedPath

GuidedPath is the original learning format at Capella University. It is structured in credit hours, and students earn grades for their coursework. In GuidedPath, learners demonstrate competencies through structured weekly assignments and interactions with faculty and peers in the online courseroom. Faculty provide substantive feedback and assign grades to learners' coursework. Courses are offered in a traditional quarter-based academic calendar. The degree or certificate is awarded upon completion of the learner’s program requirements.

FlexPath

FlexPath is an innovative, self-paced, non-credit bearing, direct assessment delivery model. It allows learners to earn a Capella degree or certificate through the demonstration of competencies on assessments completed at one’s own pace. Learners prepare for assessments through self-designed study, which may include work experience and resources recommended by faculty and tutors. Faculty provide substantive feedback on and evaluate learners’ assessments in terms of the level of competency demonstration, rather than assigning grades. FlexPath has a flat-rate tuition for a subscription period of 12 weeks, during which learners may be registered for two courses concurrently; learners may complete courses at their own pace. The degree or certificate is awarded upon completion of the program requirements.

Accelerated Master's Pathways (AMP)

Capella University offers Accelerated Master's Pathways (AMP) for eligible undergraduate students, allowing them to seamlessly transition into a master's degree program.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for an accelerated master’s pathway option, learners must:

  • Submit transcripts from all previous higher education institutions.
  • Have received a minimum 2.8 cumulative grade point average (GPA) on all previous college coursework.
  • Have no fewer than 24 total eligible transfer credits.

Maintaining Enrollment in AMP

Once enrolled in a GuidedPath accelerated master’s pathway option, learners must maintain an overall cumulative GPA of 2.8 and receive no more than one grade of “C” in any master’s-level course to remain enrolled in the AMP option. Once enrolled in a FlexPath accelerated master’s pathway option, learners are expected to earn a minimum "proficient" evaluation on all master's-level competencies and all competencies in their program.

Transition to Master's Program

Once learners have successfully completed the requirements for their bachelor’s degree program and their degree has been awarded, they may apply to the master’s degree program that corresponds to their chosen accelerated master’s pathway option.

Honors Pathway

Capella University offers an honors pathway that is incorporated into the learner's undergraduate degree program. It consists of 15 quarter credits of interdisciplinary honors general education courses aligned to the following three general education distribution areas: communication, humanities, and social science.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the honors pathway, learners must:

  • Have completed a minimum of 39 quarter credits, including at least 15 quarter credits of Capella University credit.
  • Maintain a minimum 3.5 cumulative Capella grade point average (GPA).

Maintaining Enrollment in Honors Pathway

Once enrolled in the honors pathway, learners must maintain an overall cumulative GPA of 3.5 to remain in the honors pathway and receive the honors pathway designation with their conferred degree. Learners enrolled in the honors pathway must earn a grade of “B" or better in the honors courses (PHI-H2005, SOC-H3005, and COM-H4005). Learners who do not attain at least a “B" after one allowable retake will be removed from the honors pathway. Learners who do not re-take the course within two quarters of active registration will be removed from the pathway.

Multiple Specializations and Concentrations

Capella University offers multiple specializations designed to provide learners with knowledge in more than one course of study within an eligible degree program. They lead to the award of a single degree with two or more specializations. Learners enrolled in an eligible degree program may request to be enrolled in additional eligible specializations at any point during their program. Concentrations are designed to provide learners with deeper knowledge in a specific subject area. They include a specific set of courses in a narrowly defined field of study that is taken either to fulfill a degree program requirement or add to a degree program requirement. Learners enrolled in an eligible degree program that does not include a concentration as part of its requirements may request to be enrolled in eligible concentrations at any point during their program.

Licensure and Certification

Capella University offers programs leading to advanced degrees in several disciplines for which professional practice requires licensure or certification by state, local, or professional boards. Licensing and certification standards vary. Capella University makes no representation, warranty, or guarantee that successful completion of degree or certificate programs will permit the learner to obtain licensure or certification. Learners who enroll in a Capella University program in a discipline for which professional practice requires a license or certification are solely responsible for understanding and complying with state, local, or professional licensure and certification requirements. Learners are also responsible for taking the steps necessary to satisfy those requirements. Capella University requires all learners in licensure programs to review the professional licensure disclosure information for the state in which they intend to seek a license. Learners in licensure programs must also submit a licensure responsibilities and acknowledgement form in which they acknowledge their responsibility to understand and comply with licensing and certification laws and regulations. Completion of a Capella program alone may not meet some professional licensure requirements. Students and graduates of Capella’s licensure programs should also be aware that some licensing board requirements cannot be fulfilled after degree conferral. Students enrolled in a professional licensure program who are considering changing their program to another Capella licensure program should review the professional licensure disclosures of the jurisdiction in which they intend to practice and discuss the professional licensure requirements with an enrollment counselor or academic advisor. It is your responsibility to understand and comply with the professional licensure requirements for the jurisdiction you intend to practice in.
