Capstone Education Group: Empowering Under-Resourced Communities Through Knowledge and Wisdom
Capstone Education Group (CEG) stands as a charter management organization dedicated to serving under-resourced children within local communities in Memphis. Through tuition-free public schools catering to Pre-K through 8th grade, CEG operates locations in Binghampton, Frayser, and Parkway Village, striving to make a lasting impact on the lives of its students.
The CEG Mission: Bridging Knowledge and Wisdom
At the heart of CEG's mission lies a distinct differentiation between the terms "Wisdom" and "Knowledge." CEG recognizes that true success extends beyond the acquisition of facts and figures.
- Knowledge: Refers to what a scholar knows. This includes knowledge of facts, ways of problem-solving, thinking, analyzing, organizing thoughts, communicating, and working with others.
- Wisdom: Encompasses the character and discernment to know when and how to apply this knowledge to succeed in college and effectively lead others.
This holistic approach emphasizes the importance of not only academic proficiency but also the development of character, critical thinking, and leadership skills.
A Decade of Transformation: CEG's Journey with the Achievement School District
Capstone Education Group (CEG) participated in the original cohort of organizations that launched the Achievement School District (ASD) enacted by the Tennessee First to the Top Act. Tennessee earned the right to utilize Race To The Top funds to transform the lowest performing schools in the state and authorized CEG to help execute that plan. Ten years after the ASD authorized CEG for one school, CEG now serves more than 1,400 students and hundreds of families in the Binghampton, Frayser and Parkway Village communities. CEG knows firsthand the difficulty of school transformation, having performed the work for 10+ years. CEG is excited by the opportunity to part of our communities for the long-term.
The CEG Blueprint for Academic Success
CEG drives academic success through its culture, academic model and teacher development process. The academic model is codified in the CEG Blueprint. Calendars, schedules, assessments, curriculum maps and lesson plans have all been created and codified to be used at future schools. CEG believes that consistency in these and other areas of the academic model lead to consistent academic achievement of students across a network of schools. Finally, CEG utilizes consistent teacher professional development practices for all schools. The CEG training and development, is based primarily on high-performing urban schools’ practices and resources, quickly develops teachers into effective educators.
