Carroll University: A Legacy of Pioneering Education

Carroll University, a private institution nestled in Waukesha, Wisconsin, holds the distinction of being Wisconsin's oldest four-year institution of higher learning. Its roots trace back to 1841 with the establishment of Prairieville Academy, which later evolved into Carroll University in 1846.

A Historical Overview

Before becoming Carroll University in 1846, the institution existed as Prairieville Academy, founded in 1841. A period of transition occurred between July 31, 1871, and June 22, 1893, during which college-level instruction was suspended. Despite retaining its charter and college privileges, the institution primarily focused on academy-level teaching during this time.

Academic Programs

Carroll University provides a wide array of academic opportunities, boasting over 95 areas of study at the undergraduate level. In addition to its undergraduate programs, the university offers master's degrees and certificates in specific disciplines, along with a clinical doctorate program in physical therapy.

Traditions and Campus Life

Since the 1960s, the enchanting sound of bagpipes has become an integral part of Carroll's opening convocation and commencement ceremonies, adding a touch of Scottish heritage to the university's traditions.

Athletics

Carroll's athletic teams are known as the Pioneers. As the Pioneers, Carroll competes in 23 intercollegiate varsity sports. The college football program at Carroll has a rich history, dating back to the late 1890s. Over the years, the program has been led by notable head coaches such as Glenn Thistlethwaite, Vince DiFrancesca, and Matty Bell.

Student Newspaper: The New Perspective

The New Perspective (TNP) serves as Carroll University's student newspaper. Published every other Tuesday during the academic year, with exceptions for holidays, semester breaks, and exam periods, TNP has a circulation of 1,500. The newspaper is distributed free of charge throughout the campus and the city. Founded in 1874 as the Carroll Echo, the paper underwent a name change in 1968, becoming The Perspective. In 1976, Gary Stevens, then the faculty advisor for the newspaper, proposed replacing the editor-in-chief position with an editorial staff, a change that was subsequently approved by the Student Senate.
