Carthage College Housing Options: A Comprehensive Guide

Choosing where to live is a crucial part of the college experience. At Carthage College, a variety of housing options are available, each offering a unique environment for living and learning. This article provides a detailed overview of these options, the housing selection process, and related policies to help students make informed decisions.

On-Campus Housing: An Integrated Living-Learning Experience

Carthage College emphasizes the integration of curricular and co-curricular experiences. To support this philosophy, full-time undergraduate students are generally required to live in residence halls and participate in a meal plan. The residence halls foster an exciting environment conducive to both academic and personal growth.

Traditional Residence Halls

Carthage boasts several large, traditional residence halls, each with its own distinct character:

  • Henry Denhart Residence Hall: A traditional-style hall featuring standard double rooms, a few quad rooms, and some suite-style options. Communities consist of approximately 37 students sharing a communal bathroom. Located across from the N.E. Tarble Residence Hall.

  • N.E. Madrigrano Family Residence Hall: This traditional-style hall offers standard double rooms and a limited number of single-room options. Communities are comprised of approximately 40 students who share a communal bathroom.

  • Joseph Johnson Residence Hall: Similar to Denhart, Johnson Hall provides traditional double rooms, a few quad rooms, and some suite-style options. Communities consist of approximately 36 students sharing a communal bathroom.

  • Tarble Residence Hall: The only all-female residence hall on campus. Tarble Hall is a traditional-style residence hall with standard double rooms, some suite-style options, a few single-room options, and a few quad rooms. Communities are comprised of approximately 36 students who share a communal bathroom. Tarble Hall is located near the Hedberg Library and the A. F.

Each of these halls has first-year communities and often includes Greek-affiliated floors. They are overseen by a live-in professional staff member and a team of student staff who provide support and guidance to residents.

Suite-Style Housing

For upperclassmen seeking a more independent living arrangement, Carthage offers suite-style housing options:

  • The Tower Residence Hall: The newest addition to the campus housing program, the Tower is an eight-story building connected to Joseph Johnson and Madrigrano Family Residence Halls. It houses up to 121 students and features suite-style living with two double rooms connected by a shared bathroom.

  • The Oaks Residential Village: This village provides suite-style housing with single and double rooms, accommodating two people per bathroom. Some triple and quad suites are also available.

Campus Apartments and Houses

Beyond the traditional residence halls, Carthage offers apartment and house options for students seeking a more independent lifestyle:

  • Campus Apartments (Parkway Apartments): Located just north of campus at 1625 Sheridan Road.

  • Carthage Houses: Four houses are available for undergraduate students on 17th Street, just north of campus. Each fully furnished house has a unique layout, including two or more bedrooms, a common area, a full kitchen, a bathroom, and a washer/dryer for residents' free use.

Wyndham Garden

  • Wyndham Garden: Located just seven minutes from campus, the Wyndham Garden offers the comfort and community of a Carthage residence hall, but the experience of living in Downtown Kenosha. Live among other Firebirds on two floors reserved for Carthage, and be supported by on-site Residential Life staff and floor programming, just like in the traditional halls.

Housing Selection Process

The housing selection process for returning students takes place in the spring semester. Here's an overview of the key steps and considerations:

  1. Application and Contract: Students must sign their housing contract and submit an application to be eligible to participate in the housing selection process. The housing contract is a binding agreement for the full academic year, and students should carefully review it before signing. After the contract is signed, students may not be released from their contract without approval for a residency exemption. We encourage students to read through the entirety of the contract.

  2. Roommate Requests: Students can request and accept roommate invitations from December 1 through March 19.

  3. Off-Campus Housing Request: Students who do not meet a standard residency exemption but wish to live off-campus should indicate their interest in the housing application. The Office of Residential Life will maintain a waitlist based on completed credit hours. Priority deadline for students to request off-campus housing in their application is February 1.

  4. Selection Times: Housing selection times are determined by the number of successfully completed academic credit hours after J-Term. Credit hours in progress are not considered, while transferred credit hours are included in the total.

  5. Strategic Planning: Because room selection can be unpredictable, students are encouraged to develop multiple plans before their selection time.

Senior Status and Off-Campus Eligibility

Students who will achieve senior standing (earning 98 credits or more by May 2024) are eligible to live off-campus for the 2024-25 academic year. Those with senior status who wish to live off-campus should not sign up for housing. All students with less than 98 credits are required to sign up for housing.

Housing Accommodations

Students with disabilities or medical conditions requiring specific housing accommodations must apply through the Housing Accommodations Process. The deadline for fall semester accommodations is March 1. While applying for accommodations, students should still participate in the spring housing selection process. Submission of this form does not guarantee the accommodation will be provided. Additional documentation may be required and must be reviewed by the Housing Accommodations Committee.

Important Policies and Procedures

Financial Considerations

Housing rates do not include the cost of the meal plan. Students experiencing a change in financial status are encouraged to contact the Office of Student Financial Services to request additional funding through an appeal process.

Missing Student Policy

The College has a specific policy regarding missing students. A student may be considered "missing" if their absence is contrary to their usual behavior and unusual circumstances may have caused it. Any report of a missing student will be investigated by College personnel under the coordination of the Office of Student Life and Office of Public Safety.

Each resident has the option to identify a primary emergency contact to be notified in case of an emergency or if the resident is reported missing. For residents under 18 and not emancipated, the primary emergency contact must be a custodial parent or guardian. The College will initiate the emergency contact provisions no later than 24 hours after a student is determined to be missing.

Summer Housing

Summer housing is typically provided in the Tower Residence Hall. Applications are available on March 1 through the Housing Self-Service Portal. Students are required to transition from their spring to summer housing assignment on May 30, and from their summer to fall housing assignment when their room becomes available in August. Transition notices will be sent to students as spaces are turned over and cleaned.

Summer housing costs are due as follows:

  • Summer Move-in - June 30
  • July 1-31
  • August 1-Fall Move-in
  • Students with unfavorable balances (more than $2,500) must pay for 100% of summer housing costs upfront.
