Navigating Resources and Services at Carthage College's Hedberg Library

Hedberg Library at Carthage College supports students, faculty, and staff through a variety of resources and services, both physical and virtual. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the library's offerings, including access to materials, research assistance, technology support, and interlibrary loan options.

Accessing the Library Building and Collections

The library building is open to students, faculty, and staff, providing access to a wide range of physical materials. The hours are subject to change throughout the semester based on events on and around campus. The library is open for you to check out materials, available on a first-come-first-served basis. It is important to return all checked-out library items, including computing equipment, by their due dates.

Virtual Library Services

Recognizing the importance of remote access, the Hedberg Library and all of LIS have transitioned completely to virtual services. During periods when the physical library is closed or for those who prefer remote access, a wealth of online resources are available. Effective Thursday, March 26, the Hedberg Library transitioned completely to virtual services.

If assistance is needed, visit the list of librarians and contact information, and send a message.

Online Resources and Databases

The library provides access to a wide array of online resources. On the right-hand side of the webpage, carthage.libguides.com/carthagelibrary, there are links to "Subject" and "Class Guides" for each major offered at Carthage, with recommended subject databases. To check for new resources, visit the library databases page and look in the right column.

Flipster

The library offers a trial for Flipster, an online service that allows you to read common periodicals from your device.

Technology Support

Did you know you can check the status of all the technology used to support e-learning at My.carthage.edu? Well, now you do.

Research Assistance and Liaison Program

Hedberg Library is staffed by professional librarians available to offer assistance with Carthage students' research needs. The purpose of the liaison program is to establish ongoing partnerships with Carthage faculty, students, and staff.

Contacting a Librarian

Please contact the librarian for your subject by clicking on their profile at the left or choosing your major or subject at the right. On the left-hand side of the webpage, carthage.libguides.com/carthagelibrary, there is the contact information for our reference librarians and how to set up appointments either face-to-face, or through Zoom or Google Meet.

Instruction Sessions for Faculty

Hedberg Library is committed to helping faculty teach students research processes and best practices. A librarian can work with you to create an instruction session that will produce appropriate electronic and print resources for your specific class or give a general overview of research techniques and resources available at Carthage.

Faculty may make suggestions for department-specific items to add to the library collection through their liaison. Faculty may also suggest additions to the library collection through this webform. If you are proposing a new course or part of a new major/minor on campus, please include your librarian in the discussion of resources to add to the collection. Please look at the list to the left or right to find the liaison for your department. You may contact them directly to set up instruction sessions, ask questions, or discuss library collections.

Interlibrary Loan

Interlibrary Loan is a service that allows the library to borrow items from other libraries. Interlibrary Loan services are unavailable because libraries across the country are closed. At this time, the library prefers that you work with one of its librarians directly to make sure you are fully utilizing Carthage’s resources to find what you need. Interlibrary loan is available but in a limited capacity. Not all libraries are open for service, and some that are may have delayed response times in shipping out materials.

Circulation Services and Due Dates

Circulation services are suspended, except when requested through correspondence with a reference librarian. If you think you need something from the library, please visit the list of librarians and contact information, and send a message. For the time being, due dates for all library items are still set to Wednesday, May 20. Any changes to that date will be communicated via The Bridge. Please remember that the library still expects all books, computing equipment, etc. Please make every attempt to return all the library items you checked out (including computing equipment) by their due dates. Right now, all items checked out during the spring semester have a due date of Thursday, Oct. 1.

Package Delivery: Amazon Hub Locker "Phil"

Students can access the lockers during regular TWC hours of operation. In order to expedite the process of students receiving packages, the Package Concierge system was implemented. The employee will then retrieve the package or letter. The system will then prompt them to enter a pin. Once the student has entered their pin, a locker will open, and they can take their packages out of the locker. Our Amazon Hub Locker, “Phil” is one option a student can choose to send their packages to. Not all packages will be able to be sent to the locker, depending on size and availability in the locker system. To use Phil, the person ordering will need to select Phil as the shipping address. This can either be done through the “Your Addresses” tab and selecting “Add Address” > find an Amazon pickup location. Though Phil is a convenient way to ship Amazon packages to campus, it is not the only way.
