The Catholic University Cardinals Men's Basketball: A Century of Tradition and Triumph
The Catholic University Cardinals men's basketball team proudly represents The Catholic University of America in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III college basketball competition as a distinguished member of the Landmark Conference. Located in Washington, D.C., the team calls the Raymond A. DuFour Center its home arena. Under the guidance of Head Coach Aaron Kelly, who is in his 1st season, the Cardinals strive for excellence on and off the court.
Early Years and Growth
The program's roots trace back to the 1909-10 season when it began as a club sport, achieving varsity status the subsequent year. During that initial club sport season, Joseph Bollin was listed as the team's "manager," though the team lacked an official head coach. The first game during the club sport era was against Georgetown University, marking the beginning of intercollegiate competition. The first official game was a memorable 42-33 home victory over Gallaudet University on January 7, 1911. The team followed it with a 37-34 victory over St.
In 1924, a significant milestone was reached with the opening of the Brookland Gymnasium, the first on-campus arena dedicated to basketball.
Mid-Century Successes
The 1940s brought significant recognition to the program. The 1943-44 men's basketball team achieved a historic feat by winning the Mason-Dixon Conference title, which earned the program's first-ever appearance in the NCAA tournament. The team had the opportunity to showcase their talent at the iconic Madison Square Garden, where they faced formidable opponents Dartmouth and Temple.
In the 1963-64 season, Catholic participated in the NCAA College Division (Division II) Tournament held at Hofstra, facing tough competition against Hofstra and Philadelphia.

A New Era of Dominance
The late 1990s and early 2000s marked a golden era for Catholic University basketball. Our three latest seasons have been records of accomplishment and victory. Schools of much greater prominence have been conquered, and even the acknowledged college champions of the North have bowed in defeat to us. The pinnacle of success arrived in 2001 when the men's basketball team won the NCAA Division III National Championship, solidifying their place among the nation's elite. Notably, Catholic was the only program in Division III to achieve the remarkable feat of reaching the Sweet Sixteen in five consecutive seasons, from 1998 to 2002.
