CBC Spouses Education Scholarship: Empowering the Next Generation of Black Leaders
For over three decades, the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation (CBCF), in partnership with the CBC Spouses, has been dedicated to fostering educational opportunities for talented and deserving students. The CBC Spouses Education Scholarship, established in 1988, stands as a testament to this commitment, addressing the critical educational needs within congressional districts, particularly in light of federal cuts in education spending that disproportionately affect people of color. Each year, the program awards more than 300 scholarships to students who demonstrate exceptional leadership, community service, and academic talent.
A Legacy of Support: Addressing Educational Disparities
The CBC Spouses Education Scholarship directly confronts the educational disparities faced by African-American and Black students. Recognizing the disproportionate impact of funding cuts on minority communities, the scholarship provides crucial financial assistance to help students achieve their academic aspirations. The scholarship's origins are rooted in a deep understanding of the challenges faced by students of color and a proactive approach to creating opportunities for advancement.
Eligibility and Application Requirements
The CBC Spouses Education Scholarship is awarded to academically talented and highly motivated African-American or Black students pursuing undergraduate, graduate, or doctoral degrees in various fields. Here's a breakdown of the key requirements:
- Residency or Enrollment: Applicants must reside or attend an academic institution within a Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) Member's District. Current high school seniors are also eligible to apply. To determine your Representative, enter your permanent address zip code or your academic institution's address zip code. If more than one representative is shown, please enter your full address.
- Academic Pursuit: Applicants must be preparing to pursue or currently pursuing an undergraduate, graduate, or doctoral degree full-time at an accredited college or university.
- Leadership and Community Involvement: A strong emphasis is placed on leadership qualities and active engagement within the community.
- Application Materials: A complete application package includes the following:
- Video Response: A personal statement, in video form, discussing your academic interests and/or professional goals and how you will make change in your community with your education.
- Transcripts: A legible copy of your current transcript in a PDF file. The transcript should clearly display the name of the academic institution, student name and information, courses, grades, and other relevant details (unofficial transcripts are accepted).
- Resume: A resume in PDF format, highlighting academic accomplishments, extracurricular activities, honors, employment, community service, and special skills.
- Letters of Recommendation: Two letters of recommendation in PDF format, submitted on formal, professional letterhead and including contact information.
- Professional Headshot: A recent professional headshot suitable for publication (does not have to be professionally taken). This photograph will be used in reports and biographies both internally and externally.

The CBC Spouses Education Scholarship extends beyond simply providing financial assistance. As one scholarship recipient shared, "It is truly an honor to be recognized for my hard work and community service…My legacy is one that will be measured by lifelong learning and a burning desire to serve humanity through the development and deliverance of ‘lifesaving’ medicines that are both safe and affordable, improving the quality of life for people around the world…I continue to use the knowledge that I have acquired leading towards a successful future. Specialized Scholarship Programs
In addition to the general CBC Spouses Education Scholarship, the CBCF and CBC Spouses offer several specialized scholarships targeting specific fields of study:

- The Curtis Mayfield Scholarship: Established in 2000 in honor of the late Curtis Mayfield, this scholarship provides financial assistance to African-American or Black students pursuing a degree in the performing arts.
- The Visual Arts Scholarship: Established in 2006, this scholarship supports African American or Black students pursuing a degree in the visual arts.
- The Law School Scholarship: Established in 2021, this scholarship provides financial assistance to students pursuing a law degree. This scholarship award seeks to minimize the debt of higher education that plagues scholars after their completion of the professional degree program, with a goal of increasing the number of highly qualified and competitive law professionals entering the workforce.
- Entrepreneurship Through Acquisition (ETA) Scholarship: This scholarship supports MBA students pursuing small business ownership through acquisition after graduation, promoting opportunities for financial advancement and business ownership. The Entrepreneurship through Acquisition (ETA) programs at selected HBCUs are designed to help students acquire small businesses impacted by the “Silver Tsunami,” the mass retirement of small business owners in the baby boomer generation.
- Essay Contest and Issue Forum: Each year, qualified African-American and Black junior and senior high school students participate in the Essay Contest and Issue Forum. Students are presented with a topic that embodies some of our communities’ most pressing issues and are asked to write an essay to defend their research, analyses, and opinion.

The CBC Spouses Education Scholarship award is not renewable.
