"Watson" Season 2: Renewal Details, Cast, and Storyline

CBS's "Watson," a modern medical drama inspired by the characters of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, has been renewed for a second season. The show, which stars Morris Chestnut as Dr. John Watson, offers a fresh take on the classic Sherlock Holmes universe, shifting the focus from crime-solving to solving complex medical mysteries.

Premise and Plot Developments

The series is set a few months after the presumed death of Sherlock Holmes at the hands of Moriarty, plunging Dr. John Watson into a new chapter of his life. Resuming his medical career, Watson becomes the head of a clinic dedicated to treating rare disorders. However, his past isn't far behind, as the specter of Moriarty and the enduring legacy of Sherlock Holmes continue to influence his present.

Season 1 introduced a significant twist with Randall Park portraying James Moriarty. The finale saw Moriarty's demise, but his impact on Watson's life and psyche lingers, setting the stage for Season 2.

Executive producer and showrunner Craig Sweeny has teased that the role Watson played in Moriarty’s death "really challenges [Watson’s] conception of who he is and what he’s capable of." He also previewed, "We’re doing a lot of new narrative stuff in Season 2,” and that Watson enters the season with a sense that he might not know himself as well as he thought he did.

Sherlock Holmes Enters the Scene

One of the most exciting developments for Season 2 is the introduction of Sherlock Holmes himself, played by Robert Carlyle. The series premiere began with both Sherlock and Moriarty seemingly dying after their confrontation at Reichenbach Falls, but a body for Sherlock was never seen. The Season 2 description confirms that Sherlock is indeed alive.

Sweeny expressed enthusiasm about Carlyle joining the cast, stating, "We are thrilled to have the mighty Robert Carlyle join the cast of Watson in Season 2. The man has played iconic roles in projects like Trainspotting, The Full Monty, and 28 Weeks Later… and now he steps into the shoes of the most iconic detective of all, Sherlock Holmes."

While Watson’s team of “doc-tectives” may have defeated Moriarty last season, they remain determined in Season 2 in their mission to investigate and treat the world’s most rare diseases for their clinic’s patients.

Returning and New Cast Members

Alongside Morris Chestnut as Dr. John Watson and Robert Carlyle as Sherlock Holmes the series also sees the return of several familiar faces:

  • Eve Harlow as Ingrid Derian
  • Peter Mark Kendall as twins Dr. Stephens Croft and Dr. Adam Croft
  • Ritchie Coster as Shinwell Johnson
  • Inga Schlingmann as Sasha Lubbock
  • Rochelle Aytes as Dr. Mary Morstan
  • Rachel Hayward as Lestrade is also expected to return.

Noah Mills joins the cast in a recurring role as Beck Wythe, a man who returns to his hometown of Pittsburgh after a career setback in Silicon Valley. He meets Ingrid Derian (Eve Harlow) in group therapy for people trying to manage their Cluster B personality disorders.

Episode Details and Story Arcs

The premiere episode of Season 2, titled "A Son in the Oven," involves Watson and his team springing into action when Mary’s mother accidentally poisons herself while suffering from a rare form of dementia that is progressing with impossible speed.

Season 2 promises to delve deeper into the characters' backstories and relationships. Sweeny shared that there will be a profound testing of the Watson and Mary relationship, with viewers learning more about each of their families and their history together. Sasha and Stephens will be seen in a surprising new light, Adam will be forced to confront his ambitions, and Ingrid will grapple with the possibility of change.

While Moriarty is out of the picture, the show is not ruling out bringing in more villains from the world of Sherlock Holmes, creating a paradigm that includes Conan Doyle’s world without necessarily focusing on a specific villain each season.

Production and Release Schedule

The second season of "Watson" will consist of 20 episodes, promising a wealth of new medical cases and character development.

While it is unusual for a new scripted broadcast series launching in midseason not to return in the fall, CBS Entertainment President Amy Reisenbach explained that scheduling constraints led to the decision to hold "Watson" until midseason. The show was originally slated to follow "Tracker" in the fall lineup.

Streaming Availability

To compensate for the midseason premiere, CBS is encouraging viewers to binge "Watson" on Paramount+. Reisenbach expressed confidence that "Tracker" and "Y: Marshals" would provide strong lead-ins for "Watson," and that the show's loyal fan base on Paramount+ would ensure continued viewership.
