The Rise and Fall of Centenary College Football: A Legacy Revived
Centenary College of Louisiana, located in Shreveport, is home to one of the most compelling stories in college football history, a narrative marked by both remarkable ascendance and abrupt cessation. Within a mere 25 years, the college's football program soared to national recognition, only to be discontinued, leaving a void that lasted for over half a century. Now, after decades of absence, the sport has triumphantly returned to campus.
The Glory Years: 1920-1941
Between 1920 and 1941, Centenary College's football program experienced a period of unprecedented success. During this era, the Gents achieved undefeated seasons and secured conference championships. They achieved remarkable victories against some of the most prominent programs in college football history, establishing themselves as a formidable force. The team set NCAA records, triumphed over a nationally ranked team in Shreveport, and boasted All-American players. Notably, the program even produced a future Pro Football Hall of Fame player.
In the fall of 1894, Centenary College's football team played its inaugural game, marking the beginning of a rich athletic tradition. The team was initially located in Jackson, Louisiana. The team quickly gained a reputation as a powerhouse, securing victories over formidable opponents such as Notre Dame, the Texas Longhorns, and LSU. Known for their aggressive style of play, they earned the moniker "the Old Ironsides" according to the American Football Database. However, in an effort to improve their image, the team later adopted the more refined nickname "Gentlemen."
The 1922 Season: A Glimpse of Greatness
The 1922 Centenary Gentlemen football team exemplified the program's prowess during this golden age. Coached by 'Bo' McMillin, the team showcased exceptional talent and determination, capturing the attention of fans and rivals alike.
Decline and Discontinuation
Despite their remarkable achievements, the Centenary College football program faced challenges that ultimately led to its demise. Head Coach Homer Norton departed after the 1933 season, marking the beginning of a decline in both success and fan interest. In 1941, after an 0-8-2 season, the team was discontinued for the duration of World War II due to budget deficits.

Although football briefly resurfaced in 1947, the revival was short-lived. After a season with only one victory, the football program was permanently halted in December 1947.
A New Era Begins: The Return of the Gents
On November 10, 2021, Centenary College made a historic announcement: the return of its football program. This decision marked the end of a long hiatus and the beginning of a new chapter in the college's athletic history.
The appointment of Shreveport native Byron Dawson as the Gents' new head coach on March 30, 2022, further fueled the excitement surrounding the program's revival. Dawson, a former Evangel and LSU standout, made history as the first African-American head football coach in the school's history.
The Modern Gents: Building a Foundation
Under the leadership of Coach Dawson, the Gents have been diligently preparing for their return to the gridiron. The team's roster includes a diverse group of players, with several hailing from the Shreveport-Bossier area, as well as 15 out-of-state players.
The Gents' return to Mayo Field has been met with enthusiasm from the Centenary community and football fans alike. Despite limited parking and hot temperatures, supporters are encouraged to come out and cheer on the team as they embark on this new journey.

Joining the SCAC: A New Conference Home
Since 2024, the Centenary Gentlemen football team has been a member of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC), competing at the NCAA Division III level. This affiliation provides the Gents with a competitive platform to showcase their talent and build rivalries with other institutions.
Overcoming Early Obstacles: A Historical Perspective
It's worth noting that Centenary's football program faced challenges even in its early years. The school assembled makeshift teams for the 1894, 1895, and 1896 seasons. However, in 1898, the Board of Trustees prohibited participation in intercollegiate athletics due to significant losses to Louisiana State University in football, which led to the hospitalization of two Centenary players. In 1901, the ban was relaxed, permitting the college to form a baseball team.
The Legacy of the 1927 Team
The 1927 team, coached by Homer H. Norton, stands as a testament to Centenary's football prowess. From 1927 through 1936, the team compiled an impressive record of 73-22-11, including two undefeated seasons (1927 & 1932). The 1927 team achieved remarkable victories over four powers in the Southwest Conference: Southern Methodist, Baylor, Rice, and Texas Christian.
