Cesar E. Chavez and Dolores Huerta Education Award Program
The Cesar E. Chavez and Dolores Huerta Education Award Program presents an opportunity for educators and students to be recognized for their understanding and demonstration of the principles championed by Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta. This program annually awards up to $550 to deserving educators and their students.
Eligibility:
- Students of any grade level, starting from Pre-K up to undergraduates, are eligible to apply (excluding graduate students).
- Interested students must be nominated by a CTA (California Teachers Association) member.
- Applicants can submit their work in either the "Written Essay" or "Visual Art" category.
This scholarship can be used at two-year colleges, four-year colleges, and trade/technical schools.
Sí Se Puede César E. Chávez Scholarship
Established in 2012, the Sí Se Puede César E. Chávez Scholarship honors the life and legacy of Cesar Estrada Chavez. This scholarship provides financial assistance to students who demonstrate a commitment to civic engagement and show promise in applying the principles of equity and social justice during their college years, particularly at Davenport University.
Ideal Candidates:
- New high school graduates.
- Students from migrant, farmworker, or undocumented families are strongly encouraged to apply.
- Students involved in community service and/or activities that support diversity and inclusion are also encouraged.
Application Requirements:
- Essay: Applicants must explain how the quote "To make a great dream come true, the first requirement is a great capacity to dream; the second is persistence" applies to their life. They should also explain how they have exemplified or plan to exemplify this statement in their life goals and provide their thoughts on what service to others means in today's society.
- Letters of Recommendation:
- One letter must be written by a teacher/professor from the applicant's current school.
- The second letter must be written by a job supervisor/community leader for whom the applicant has worked or volunteered.
- All letters of recommendation must include the applicant's name as it appears on the application.
- Transcripts: Applicants must upload their most recent high school or college transcript. High school transcripts must include at least six semesters with a cumulative GPA.
- Student Aid Report (SAR): A copy of the Student Aid Report (SAR) is required.
- Financial Information: Applicants must provide a copy of the first two pages of their most recently filed IRS Form 1040. If they have not filed an IRS Form, they should submit a copy of their most recent W-2 form, if available, or a letter from their employer. If the applicant is financially dependent on their parents, they must submit a copy of the first two pages of their parent’s most recently filed IRS Form 1040.
The scholarship is renewable for up to 4 years or until the completion of a bachelor's degree, whichever is shorter.
