The Charles and Phyllis Frias Legacy Scholarship: Eligibility and Opportunity
The Charles and Phyllis M. Frias Legacy Scholarship offers a significant opportunity for college-bound high school seniors in Southern Nevada. Rooted in the inspiring story of Charles and Phyllis Frias, who built Nevada's largest transportation company from humble beginnings, this scholarship prioritizes resilience and determination alongside academic achievement. The scholarship, funded by the Charles and Phyllis M. Frias Charitable Trust, aims to support students with financial needs in achieving their higher education goals.
The Legacy of Charles and Phyllis Frias
Charles and Phyllis Frias arrived in Las Vegas in 1958 with limited resources. Charles began his career as a taxi driver and, through hard work and determination, eventually owned and expanded his business to include five taxi companies: ACE, ANLV, Union, Vegas Western, and Virgin Valley. Together, they built the largest transportation company in Nevada. Beyond their business success, the Friases were committed to philanthropy, donating millions to support children, education, and the less fortunate.
Following Phyllis Frias's death, the Charles and Phyllis M. Frias Charitable Trust was established in 2016 to continue their philanthropic legacy. The trust, with assets of $43 million, distributes approximately $5 million annually to pre-selected charitable organizations focused on education and youth development in Southern Nevada. Since 2017, the trust has donated more than $13.5 million to these causes, including significant gifts to organizations like the Girl Scouts.

The Importance of the Essay
The 350-word essay is a critical component of the application. It allows students to showcase their resilience, grit, and perseverance in the face of adversity. The scholarship committee places significant emphasis on these qualities, recognizing that success in college and life often depends on one's ability to overcome challenges.
Key Considerations
The scholarship committee seeks students who are focused on academics and are committed to graduating from a four-year university debt-free. While attending a Nevada four-year public university is encouraged, the committee will consider out-of-state options if it appears the student can graduate without incurring significant debt.
