Chiang Mai University: A Comprehensive Overview

Chiang Mai University (CMU), a national public research university located in northern Thailand, stands as a beacon of higher education. Founded in January 1964 under a Royal Charter granted by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, CMU holds the distinction of being the first institution of higher education in the north and the first provincial university in Thailand. Historical Foundation

The establishment of Chiang Mai University was the result of persistent efforts and public demand for a higher education institution in Northern Thailand. The newspaper Kon Muang played a vital role, publishing a campaign from June 6 to July 24, 1953, which sparked public discourse and expression of opinions on the matter. H.E. Mom Luang Pin Malakul, as Minister of Education, chaired the Preparatory Committee for the Establishment of Chiang Mai University.

The university's colors reflect the Payap Region’s traditional magenta tone. The Thong Kwao (Flame of the Forest), a tree species naturally found on the university grounds.

Campus Locations and Facilities

Chiang Mai University boasts four campuses, with three situated in Chiang Mai and one in Lamphun, covering approximately 3,490 acres (14.1 km2). Eighteen housing complexes are available on campus for students.

Main Campus (Suan Sak)

The main university campus, known as Suan Sak campus or Cherng Doi, is located about five kilometers west of the city center. Set against the backdrop of Doi Suthep Mountain, this campus occupies an area of 725 acres (2.93 km2). Bounded by main shopping streets on three sides and the Chiang Mai Zoo on the fourth, the campus houses the university's administrative center, the science, engineering, humanities, and social science faculties, political science and public administration, law, the graduate school, all campus resource facilities and services, and major sports facilities. The Ang Kaew Reservoir, originally constructed to supply water for the university, serves as a recreational area for campus residents and the local community.

Mae Hia Campus

Located about 5 km south of the main campus, the 864-acre (3.50 km2) Mae Hia campus is home to the faculties of veterinary medicine, agro-industry, and the School of Public Policy. The Energy Research and Development Institute (ERDI), the university center for renewable energy, and the energy efficiency improvement center moved to the Mae Hia campus in January 2009.

Lamphun Sri Bua Baan Campus

CMU's latest acquisition is the Lamphun Sri Bua Baan campus, situated about 55 kilometers south of Chiang Mai on a 1,890-acre (765-hectare) site near Lamphun's industrial center. This campus provides additional training and research facilities, emphasizing industrial management and efficient energy utilization.

Library Services: The University Library comprises the Central Library and 19 affiliated, discipline-specific libraries located on campus. Its inventory includes over 1,000,000 books, with 308,482 in foreign languages, 4,238 Thai journals, 3,340 foreign journals, and 35 Thai and English newspapers.
ICT Services: The IT Service Center (ITSC) provides the university and community with software products and consulting services. It also offers education and technical services for e-Learning, e-Business, and e-Government.
Medical Services: A first-aid clinic for students and staff is located next to the CMU Officials Club. The Student Health Service, at the Faculty of Medicine, also provides medical care.
Sports Facilities: Many sports fields, indoor and outdoor athletic courts, fitness parks, and a 50-meter swimming pool are located on the main campus. A variety of international sports are available on and off campus, including aerobics, badminton, basketball, boxing, field hockey, judo, petanque, rugby, soccer, softball, swimming, table tennis, and tennis.
Student Clubs: The Students Union organizes many student clubs devoted to sporting, athletic, and social activities.
Housing services: The International Hostel, meant for short and longer term visitors, has 86 standard rooms and two suites. All of the rooms and suites are fully furnished and air-conditioned.

Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU): CMU was ranked 801 by Shanghai Jiao Tong University's ARWU. ARWU considers the number of award-winning scientists, research citations, and contributions to academic fields.
World University Rankings (Times Higher Education): While a 2026 ranking is not yet available, Times Higher Education (THE) assesses universities based on their production of new ideas, global reputation, and contributions to science and academia.
U.S. News & World Report: Similarly, a 2026 ranking is pending, but U.S. News & World Report evaluates universities based on student retention and graduation rates, university resources, teacher salaries, and student achievements and satisfaction.

International students are admitted to international programs based on their English language ability and academic qualifications. Applicants whose native language is English may be exempt from the English Placement Test but must take entrance examinations as specified by individual faculties/colleges.
