Navigating Student Health Services at The Claremont Colleges

The health and safety of students are paramount at The Claremont Colleges. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the health services available to students, including medical care, counseling, and emergency support. The Claremont Colleges consortium prioritizes student well-being by maintaining close relationships with special support services, such as Student Health Services, the Monsour Counseling Center, and Campus Safety.

Prioritizing Student Well-being

The Health Education Outreach Office at The Claremont Colleges plays a vital role in promoting student health through programming and Resident Advisor training in emergency procedures. Pomona College also emphasizes the health and safety of its students, with the Office of Student Affairs collaborating closely with Student Health Services, the Monsour Counseling Center, and Campus Safety.

Accessing Student Health Services

Student Health Services (SHS) offers patient-centered healthcare with a professional and compassionate approach, directly contributing to the well-being and overall success of students. To access these services, students can visit the Student Health Services site and create an account if they are not already registered. This portal facilitates appointment booking and access to important health information.

Comprehensive Medical Services

Student Health Services provides a range of medical services during the school year, including:

  • Health education
  • Gynecological and contraceptive consultation
  • Minor outpatient surgery
  • Blood tests
  • X-rays
  • Electrocardiograms
  • Allergy shots

Insurance Requirements

Every student is required to have medical insurance coverage. Students can either enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) of The Claremont Colleges or waive out of this plan if they have comparable alternative insurance coverage. Enrollment/waiver forms are required each year. The SHIP plan covers medical expenses off-campus, such as hospitalization, surgery, and accidental injury.

The Department of Campus Safety of The Claremont Colleges protects the persons and property of students, faculty, staff, and visitors to The Claremont Colleges consortium, assisting law enforcement and other emergency service providers as needed, by being the first responder to emergencies of any kind. Campus Safety provides around-the-clock escort service on campus to anyone, as needed. Although there may be a brief waiting period, Campus Safety Officers provide escort services on a priority call basis and are available 24 hours a day. Contact them at ext. 72000. The On-Call Dean determines the appropriate steps given the situation and keeps a detailed record on the interaction and intervention. The On-Call team serves as the primary resource for managing referrals and student issues and follows up with the call.
