William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital: A Center of Excellence in Dallas

William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital in Dallas stands as a beacon of advanced medical care, seamlessly integrating knowledge, expertise, research, and innovation within a single, remarkable facility centered around the patient. As part of UT Southwestern Medical Center, the hospital offers a comprehensive range of services, from emergency care to highly specialized treatments, all delivered with a commitment to patient comfort and optimal outcomes.

Addressing Growing Needs: The Tower 3 Expansion

The hospital has expanded to meet the increasing need for specialty patient care in North Texas and surrounding states. UT Southwestern recently completed a $502 million expansion of the hospital. Opened for patients in 2020, the 12-story third tower serves as the clinical home for the Peter O’Donnell Jr. Brain Institute and adds operating rooms, interventional suites, a newly expanded Emergency Department, and two new parking facilities. The project enhances both the quality of care and the efficiency of delivery to accommodate growth. The new tower adds 292 beds, bringing Clements’ inpatient capacity to 752 total beds. Patient care is now supported by a new diagnostic imaging center and three angiography suites. The Clements University Hospital Tower 3 expansion improves the quality of hospital care and services, while eliminating infrastructure, staffing and inventory redundancies to reduce the cost of care. To support new services, the hospital has increased patient care by 21,900 hours and added more than 250 new jobs.

When UT Southwestern’s William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital first opened its doors in 2014, demand was immediately higher than anticipated, straining capacity from day one.

A Patient-Centered Approach

William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital was designed with the care and comfort of patients and their families in mind. The landscaping surrounding the hospital creates a calming environment that helps reduce stress for patients and their families. Privacy and providing a peaceful, quiet environment were priorities in the design process. The hospital’s innovative layout allows deliveries of most supplies to bypass patient hallways, reducing the noise and activity that can disturb patients’ rest. For patients, the process of checking into the hospital, navigating it, and being discharged have all been made easier.

Innovation in Hospital Design

The William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital was planned and built with quality, safety, and efficiency as top priorities. The result is a facility where every detail contributes to enhanced patient care.

The building was designed in a series of Vs, as a way of reducing the distances that caregivers must travel to reach patients on the patient care floors. The design also allows for simpler wayfinding and creates better adjacencies for care providers, as well as better visibility for team members to see each other, all of which contribute to reduced confusion and noise. Nursing stations are located immediately outside patient rooms, which helps to facilitate patient observation and reduce distractions.

An innovative chute system that quickly whisks trash and used linen away from patient areas was incorporated into the building to help prevent infections. Floor coloring was designed to reduce the risk of accidents by making dropped items easier to spot. A sophisticated air filtration system provides fresher, cleaner air throughout the hospital, which helps to reduce the risk of infections. Additionally, the hospital features specialized water treatment systems, which also work to reduce the spread of illness.

Intentional design choices enable faster response to critical conditions, with care units adjacent to the relevant support areas. A new helipad is steps away from the angio suite, where patients receive time-sensitive, life-saving intervention. Thoughtful design also means nurses and surgeons spend less time walking and more time with patients. Supply closets and computer stations are distributed throughout the units, making critical resources more accessible.
