Introduction
Established in 1817, CMS (Church Missionary Society) College, Kottayam, stands as one of the earliest Western-style colleges in India. Alongside Presidency College Calcutta, it is considered among the oldest institutions of higher education in the country. Historical Overview
Founding and Early Years
CMS College was established by the Church Missionary Society of England in 1817. The establishment of the college was patronized by Col. John Munro, the East India Company Resident, and Dewan of Travancore. Reverend Benjamin Bailey served as its first principal. In its early years, the curriculum included the study of English, Latin, Greek, Hebrew, Mathematics, History, Geography, Malayalam, Sanskrit, and Syriac.
Growth and Development
In 1838, the college moved to its present location on a wooded hillock, offering views of the Western Ghats. One of the oldest buildings on campus, originally called the "Grammar School," is known as Room 52. In 1857, CMS College was affiliated with Madras University, and students began appearing for the Matriculation examination. Until 1855, the college provided free education to all students. By 1870, the student body numbered 129.
Expansion and Affiliations
Two-year classes started in 1890, and the first batch of students appeared for the F.A. Examination in 1892. Initially, only men were admitted, with female students being welcomed from 1938 onwards. Degree classes commenced in 1950, and by 1960, the student population had grown to 1,250. Postgraduate classes were introduced in 1959. The college is currently affiliated with Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam.
Management and Accreditation
In 1981, the Synod of the Church of South India transferred the college's management to the C.S.I. Madhya Kerala Diocese. The Managing Council consists of thirteen individuals. CMS College was accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with a five-star status in 1999. In 2004, the University Grants Commission recognized it as a "College with Potential for Excellence."
