Billing and Insurance Information

Understanding billing and insurance procedures is crucial for students utilizing CMU Health Services:

  • Insurance Billing: CMU Health will bill any insurance as a courtesy; however, they do not participate with every insurance and are not in-network with every insurance.
  • Patient Responsibility: It is the patient’s responsibility to understand their policy benefits and how their carrier will process claims for services provided at on-campus clinics. Students are encouraged to call the number on the back of their insurance card to inquire about coverage and benefits while attending CMU.
  • Payment Statements: Patient balances deemed to be the patient's responsibility will be sent directly via a monthly statement.
  • Past Due Accounts: If a balance becomes "Past Due", accounts will be referred to an active CMU Account where processing fees will be applied to credit card payments. Past due accounts may be referred to an outside collection agency, and the patient will be responsible for all associated collection costs, including litigation and reasonable attorney's fees necessary for collection of the debt.
  • Self-Pay Discounts: Students who are uninsured or underinsured may qualify for self-pay discounts on most services.

Student Health Insurance

  • Importance of Health Insurance: It is highly recommended that all CMU students have health insurance coverage to protect their physical, mental, and financial health.
  • CMU's Role: CMU does not offer a student health insurance plan nor can staff recommend or advise on appropriate independent plans available to students; however, information is readily available online and through local and state agencies.
  • Required Student Insurance: CMU requires all resident students and athletes to carry primary medical coverage. Athletes will need to show proof of coverage for participation in all practices and contests.

Our Comprehensive Care Coordinator helps students identify and coordinate services to meet their health and academic support needs. The CCM works with Academic Development, Counseling and Psychological Services, Disability Resources, Housing Services, Dining Services and other campus offices.
