Hands-on Learning and Industry-Recognized Tools

A key feature of Coastline College's Cybersecurity Program is its emphasis on hands-on learning. Students are required to write programs, develop network security plans, install tools in the field of network security, build and maintain secure networks, and defend computer networks from outside attacks. They also demonstrate the ability to analyze data on a compromised computer.

The program also exposes students to industry-recognized tools and techniques. For example, students explore digital forensic techniques using industry-recognized tools. Topics covered include an introduction to network forensics and mobile device forensics, investigative and extraction tools, live acquisition data, evidence reporting, time-stamping and anti-forensic techniques, and the significance of time zones for forensic case analysis.

This practical, hands-on approach ensures that graduates are well-prepared to enter the workforce and make immediate contributions to their organizations.

Apprenticeship Program: Bridging Education and Employment

Coastline College offers an apprenticeship program in computer support specialists/cybersecurity. This program combines classroom learning with on-the-job training, providing students with valuable real-world experience. The apprenticeship program offers courses in separate tracks for both cybersecurity and Cisco networking.

An apprentice is a person at least 17 years of age, who has met the requirements for selection under the selection procedures, who is engaged in learning a designated trade and who has entered into a written apprentice agreement under the provisions of these standards. Each apprentice shall satisfactorily perform all work and learning assignments both on the job and in related instruction related to Computer Support Specialists/Cybersecurity. This is an apprenticeship position. Apprentices shall be members of the California Cybersecurity Apprenticeship Project (CCAP) program. The District reserves the right to extend, modify, or eliminate this position based upon available funds. The effective dates of employment will be arranged with the supervisor.

The apprenticeship program is designed, when possible, to incorporate the utilization of the mentor/mentee relationship, particularly in circumstances where the mentor and mentee are working for the same employer. A key project goal is the development of Mentor/Mentee relationships that will continue beyond the term of the program. Potential mentors are encouraged to identify potential apprentices currently working for their employer.

Through the apprenticeship program, students learn cybersecurity techniques by taking classes while training in a hands-on environment with a local employer.

Addressing Employer Concerns and Fostering Mentorship

Coastline College recognizes that a key concern for many employers when the subject of employee training is brought to the table is both the cost of training and the employer's return on investment (ROI). Employers may be reluctant to serve as a participant in an apprenticeship program. We have taken a number of steps designed to lessen this reluctance. Courses are aligned with the exam objectives for specific industry-recognized certifications that are American National Standards Institute (ANSI) accredited.

The program also emphasizes the importance of mentorship. The idea of developing a mentor/mentee relationship in this apprenticeship program is designed to achieve a key goal of apprenticeship completion of the program. Mentor qualifications include perspective mentors having a number of years of experience in the information technology field with a desire to serve in this role. Mentors are helpful because, in addition to expertise in their field, they have a network of business professionals and, most importantly, they are willing to share what and who they know. While it may seem to an observer the mentee seems to get the better part of the deal, the person doing the mentoring gets something out of it, too. He or she can directly impact another person's life for the better.

A Center of Academic Excellence

In 2014, Coastline College was designated a Center of Academic Excellence (CAE2Y) in accordance with the guidelines set forth by the National Security Agency and Department of Homeland Security. This designation recognizes Coastline College's commitment to excellence in cybersecurity education and its ability to prepare students for careers in this critical field.
