The Enduring Symbol: A History of the Colby College Logo
The logo of Colby College, a private liberal arts college in Waterville, Maine, has undergone several transformations throughout its history, reflecting the institution's evolution and commitment to academic excellence. From its origins as the Maine Literary and Theological Institution to its current status as a leading liberal arts college, Colby's visual identity has been carefully refined to embody its core values and aspirations.
The Genesis of a Seal: Waterville College (1821)
The origins of the Colby College seal can be traced back to 1821, when the institution was known as Waterville College, following its founding in 1813 as the Maine Literary and Theological Institution. The seal has been streamlined and revised several times, always retaining the starburst of sun rays, Latin motto, and school name. For many years, there was a face in the middle of the sun.
The earliest known seal came while the school was called Colby University. It featured a sun in splendor with eight straight rays above the school's Latin motto. Surrounding the center are the words "Sigillum Universitatis Colbianae," meaning "the seal of Colby College," and two crossed olive branch with five leaves each.
Evolution and Adaptation: Streamlining the Seal
Over the years, the Colby College seal has been streamlined and revised several times, always retaining key elements such as the starburst of sun rays, the Latin motto "Lux Mentis Scientia" ("knowledge is the light of mind"), and the school name. For many years, there was a face in the middle of the sun.
In 1936, President Franklin W. Johnson commissioned William Addison Dwiggins to design a seal to replace the one then existing, specifying only that it used the same motto as the first and retain the sun as the central theme.

A Modern Identity: The 2002 Redesign
In 2002, the college contracted with design firm Corey McPherson Nash for updates to its entire visual identity system, including the seal. A version of the current Colby seal-a crisp, circular burst of white sun rays against a backdrop of blue, with the College name in English and its motto in Latin (Lux Mentis Scientia, or “knowledge is the light of mind”)-came into use in 2002, but the seal itself dates to 1821. The current seal is set in Perpetua typeface around a sunburst.
The Mule: An Unofficial Mascot Emerges
While the seal represents the formal identity of Colby College, the "Mule" serves as the institution's athletic mascot. The Mule became the Colby mascot in a more organic manner. In the early 1920s, a sportswriter for the Colby Echo newspaper lamented the perception of Colby sports teams as “the dark horse” in competition. “We often win, but we are seldom expected to win by the ‘dopesters,’” wrote the scribe. “We have always preferred to bewail our poor prospects, make our opponents overconfident, and then surprise everybody by unexpected power. But lately this has been happening so regularly that sporting experts hesitate to predict a Colby defeat.
Visual Identity Guidelines: Maintaining Brand Consistency
Colby College has established clear visual identity guidelines to ensure consistency in its branding efforts. The Colby logotype is a unique typographic mark that displays the Colby name and represents the primary brand of Colby. The Colby logotype always appears in Colby Blue or in white on a solid background. The Colby logotype is always used in Colby Blue on white except as noted below. The preferred color for a background in materials that represent the College is Colby Blue, followed by Colby Gray from the Colby color palette. For ColbyArts brand materials, a color from the ColbyArts color palette can be used. The Colby logo is used in white or black only in a layout that uses a solid color background. The white version of the logotype is used against solid dark colors. When using the Colby logotype with other elements a safe area margin equal to the width of the “o” in the logotype should be respected. Keep the logotype large enough that the thin parts of the letterforms are easily readable. For use in videos as a constant mark the lower right corner is standard. The logotype can also be used in a larger size, centered in the frame as part of the introduction or closing credits.
The Colby seal is the College’s historical logo and is no longer used to represent the College. It may not be used in place of the logotype. The seal should only appear as part of the logo/seal unit. This unit, or lockup, is reserved exclusively to represent Colby’s most formal occasions: convocation, baccalaureate, and commencement. The seal may not be used as an additional design element screened back to add detail. Colby Athletics and Recreation is one of Colby’s distinctive sub-brands. Each varsity and club team has a complete set of logos for all uses. When using a sub-brand in a communication piece, include the Colby logotype to connect the sub-brand with the parent (Colby) brand. The Colby logotype is the foundation for each department’s representation at Colby. For a vertical format, the department name appears below the Colby logotype.
