Navigating Colgate University Course Offerings
Colgate University provides a comprehensive curriculum spanning four academic divisions: arts and humanities, natural sciences and mathematics, social sciences, and university studies. Understanding the structure of course offerings and the registration process is crucial for students to plan their academic journey effectively. This article will guide you through the essentials of Colgate's course offerings, registration procedures, and key considerations for students at all levels.
Understanding the Curriculum and Course Levels
Colgate's curriculum is designed to provide students with a broad foundation in various disciplines while allowing for specialization in their chosen fields. The university organizes its academic offerings into four divisions:
Arts and Humanities: Encompasses disciplines such as literature, history, philosophy, religion, music, theater, and art.
Natural Sciences and Mathematics: Includes fields like biology, chemistry, physics, astronomy, geology, mathematics, and computer science.
Social Sciences: Covers areas such as economics, political science, sociology, anthropology, psychology, and geography.

University Studies: Features interdisciplinary courses and programs that explore complex issues from multiple perspectives.
Courses are numbered to indicate their level and suitability for students at different stages of their academic careers:
100-level and 200-level courses: Primarily designed for first-year students and sophomores, providing introductory knowledge and foundational skills in various subjects.
300-level courses: Generally intended for juniors, offering more specialized and in-depth exploration of topics within a particular discipline.
400-level courses: Typically aimed at seniors, providing advanced study and opportunities for research, independent projects, and culminating experiences.

It's important to note that students from any class year with the appropriate background may take courses at any level, allowing for flexibility in tailoring their academic experience to their individual interests and goals. A suffix of C indicates a course offered as Core Communities and Identities.
Accessing Course Offerings
Prior to each term, the registrar posts the course offerings online. Students should consult these listings to identify courses that will be offered in the upcoming term. The course offerings provide essential information, including:
Course Title and Description: A brief overview of the course content and objectives.
Instructor: The name of the faculty member teaching the course.
Meeting Times and Location: The scheduled days, times, and location of classes, laboratories, and seminars. Classes, laboratories, and seminars meet according to the schedule posted on the course offerings for each term.

Credit Hours: The number of credits the course is worth toward graduation.

Registration Procedures
Continuing students are expected to register online via Banner Self-Service, accessible through the Colgate portal (portal.colgate.edu), logging in with your Colgate network credentials. The registration period for Spring 2026 is November 10-14. Please see the Registration Help and Tutorials page for more information on registering via Banner Self-Service.
Key Steps in the Registration Process:
Advising and PIN: Meet with your academic advisor to discuss your course selections and obtain your registration PIN. For students on Colgate study groups: Your study group director serves as your adviser for the term and will provide you with registration advising and your registration PIN. You are also encourage to have discussions with your regular academic adviser.
Check for Holds: Ensure that you do not have any holds on your record (e.g., accounts receivable hold, major hold, etc.) that would prevent you from registering. If you have a hold on your record (e.g., accounts receivable hold, major hold, etc.), you will not be allowed to register until the hold is cleared.
Access Banner Self-Service: Log in to the Colgate portal and navigate to Banner Self-Service.
Select Courses: Search for and select the courses you wish to register for, paying attention to course descriptions, meeting times, and prerequisites.
Submit Registration: Submit your registration request through Banner Self-Service.
Important Considerations for Registration:
- Registration Time: Be aware of your assigned registration time, as course availability may be limited.
- Alternate Course Selections: Provide alternate course selections in case your preferred courses are full. You run the risk of being registered for less than four courses if you do not submit alternate selections,.
- Course Restrictions: Obtain necessary permissions for restricted courses through the Course Restriction Override request form. It is your responsibility to ensure that permission is obtained. Restricted courses include those in which enrollment is limited to certain classes or majors, and courses that require the instructor’s permission. Similarly, you will not be registered for a course if you have not satisfied the prerequisites.
- Registration Confirmation: Check the portal after your registration time to view the outcome of your registration and make any necessary changes. You should log onto the portal anytime after your registration time to view the outcome of your registration, and make any changes, if needed.
- Deadlines: Adhere to all registration deadlines, including the add/drop period. All changes, including adds by instructor permission, must be made by January 7.
Registration for Off-Campus Students
Students studying off-campus (Colgate study groups, non-Colgate approved programs, leave of absence) are encouraged to register themselves via Banner Self-Service, if possible. (Please note that times listed in the registration schedule are Eastern Time.) However, the registrar’s office is available to register off-campus students, if needed.
If you elect this option, you will be registered during your scheduled class/alpha time, in the order that forms are received, provided that your registration form is received before that day/time. To avoid complications, registration requests should be submitted online no later than the morning (EST) of your registration time. Forms that are submitted in the afternoon or evening of your registration time run the risk of not being processed until the following morning.
Two-Term Courses
Departments and programs may offer courses, usually at the 400 level, which extend over two terms. These courses may carry two course credits toward graduation and may have two course numbers, although a single grade will be assigned at the completion of the second course. Students should register for a two-semester course in sequence, ordinarily the fall and spring term of the senior year. Students successfully completing the fall term course will be temporarily assigned a grade of T (for two-term course).
