- Master Adulting Skills: Making sure my daughter knows how to take care of things that have always been done for her, like getting tires rotated on the car, oil changes, filling prescriptions, etc. Helping your student become self-sufficient and maintain their good health now can help alleviate unneeded stress and concerns later. Before they head off to school, it’s important to make sure students are feeling their bestboth physically and emotionally. Many of our families schedule the not-so-fun (but rite of passage) wisdom-teeth removal. It feels like a big part of preparing for college is filling out forms.
- Manage Finances: College is expensive. He’s working all summer. If you haven’t already, have the money talk with your student. These parents have it down.
- Get TSA Pre-Check:
- Stay Healthy: COVID booster. Allergy test. Medical forms.
- Build Credit: If you don’t have one already, college is the perfect time to get your first credit-but, be careful to pay off the balance EVERY month as not a hay the extra monthly fees. When used properly, your credit card can give you the best opportunity to build your credit score and increase your purchasing power. Don’t know what credit card to start with? - Practice Public Speaking: Speaking in front of a group of people is one of the number one fears in the world! But, in college you will be able to nurture and develop your skills by engaging in various public speaking activities.
Cherish the Memories
- Create a Scrapbook: The years you spend in college will soon pass by and you will be left with nothing but memories (and a degree!). - Write a Letter to Your Future Self: It’s up to you how you’ll write a letter to your future self, but the typical topics contain telling about your current life situation as well as your dreams and hopes for the future. It’ll be so much fun for you to open up the letter in the future, on a date of your choosing, and see how much you’ve changed and which of your dreams you’ve by then achieved. It may even work as a great reminder to get back to working on those dreams your younger self dared to dream.
Fall Season Activities
- Go to a Drive-In Movie: This past fall I went to see the movie It at a drive-in movie with my besties. And though it was a sub-par movie, it was so fun to pile up in a pickup truck, cuddle in some blankets and unhealthy food, and have a good scare.
- Dress Up With Friends: Last year my friends and I were the Cheetah Girls, which was quite an adventure. We had a great time getting creative and all teaming up on a costume together.
- Go to Butterfield Farms: We have something called Butterfield Farms here in Oxford, and it’s a yearly tradition to go here and enjoy the fall festivities.
- Make a Home Cooked Meal Together: If you have a place to cook, brainstorm and make a home cooked meal together.
- Pick a Pumpkin and Decorate It: This is not something you graduate from once you leave home - you can take it with you to college. If you go to a farm, pick up your favorite pumpkin out of the selection and make something of it. I always go on Pinterest and look up some artsy ideas (although I never go all out because my artistic talents just aren’t there).
- Go to a Haunted House: Get a group together and drive to a sketchy haunted house. I have plans to go to one this fall, and I’m a bit terrified. I will make sure I always know where the exit signs are in that darn place.
- Have a Bonfire: Find a bonfire fit and throw on your favorite flannel, make some s’mores, and have good conversation. I love bonfires because they are a great time for deep, meaningful discussion. And the smell of one exudes the best of the fall season.
Graduation
- Decorate Your Graduation Hat: From sparkles to flowers, there’s dozens of ways to spruce up your graduation hat. So, get creative and design something artistic. Struggling for ideas?
