College of Engineering Pune: A Legacy of Technical Education
COEP Technological University (COEP Tech), formerly College of Engineering Pune, stands as a premier technical education institution in India, boasting a rich history that dates back to 1854. Founded as the "Poona Engineering and Mechanical School," the institution has evolved from its initial purpose of training public works department (PWD) officials to becoming a leading university offering a diverse array of undergraduate and postgraduate programs in engineering, technology, and management.
Early Years and Transformation
The institution's story began in July 1854 when it was established in Bhawanipeth, Poona. Housed in three buildings for teaching and a separate residence for the principal, the school aimed to train subordinate officers for the Public Works Department. Admission was open to all, irrespective of nationality or caste, with proficiency in English and basic mathematics as prerequisites. Aspiring candidates applied through the nearest government English school, with entrance examinations overseen by Henry Coke, who took charge of the institute in July 1857. Scholarships of ₹ 6 per month were offered to fifteen students after six months of training.
In 1865, the school was renamed "Poona Civil Engineering College." The foundation stone of the new college was laid on August 5, 1865, by Sir Bartle Frere, the Governor of Bombay and future Vice-Chancellor of the University. The following year, Theodore Cooke was appointed Principal, a position he held for 28 years. The college initially offered a course in Licensed and Civil Engineering (LCE) and trained masons and overseers, eventually securing affiliation with the University of Bombay.
Evolution of Academic Programs
In 1909, the LCE program was converted into a Bachelor of Engineering (BE) degree, with the first batch of students graduating in 1912. The institution, initially affiliated with the University of Bombay in 1858 for a degree of Licentiate in Civil Engineering (LCE), expanded its offerings over time. Degree programs in mechanical engineering and electrical engineering were introduced in 1912 and 1932, respectively. After the establishment of the University of Poona in 1948, the college became affiliated with the new university.
Autonomy and Renaming
A significant milestone was achieved in 2003 when the State Government of Maharashtra granted the institute complete autonomy. This autonomy allowed the institution to set its own curriculum and manage its finances independently. Subsequently, the institute was renamed "Pune Institute of Engineering and Technology" before finally adopting its current name, "College of Engineering, Pune," in 2006. As COEP Technological University, the institution continues to operate as a Unitary Public University of the Government of Maharashtra.

Campus and Infrastructure
The campus of COEP is spread over 36 acres. The main building serves as the administrative hub, housing the Director, Dean of Academic Affairs, Dean of Student Affairs, Gymkhana, Examination cell, and other key administrative offices. The building stands three floors tall, with a base floor measuring 18 meters in length and 9 meters in width. In a bid to boost research in engineering and postdoctoral research, COEP was granted an additional campus on government land located in Chikhali, PCMC. This extended campus is having area of 40 acres.
Admissions and Academics
Admissions to COEP are based on the scores obtained in the Maharashtra Common Entrance Test (CET) and the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) board examinations. The Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) conducts these admissions through the Centralized Admission Process (CAP). Additionally, direct second-year admissions to the BTech program are available for candidates who have completed a Diploma in Engineering from polytechnic institutes in Maharashtra.
COEP Tech has thirteen academic departments under five different Schools and six Centers of Excellence, namely Signal and Image Processing and Smart Renewal Energy Systems supported by TEQIP and Biomedical Engineering & Technology Incubation Centre (BETiC) supported by Rajiv Gandhi Science & Technology Commission, Government of Maharashtra. Industrial Automation; Advance Electronics Manufacturing; Robotics and Automation supported by Industry. The University offers nine Under-graduate programmes in engineering and twenty six Post-graduate courses in engineering and one Under- graduate and Post-graduate programme in Planning; two Post-graduate programmes in Business Administration, besides Ph.D.
Student Life and Extracurricular Activities
COEP Technological University offers a vibrant campus life with a range of extracurricular activities and events.
Regatta
The annual Regatta, a tradition since 1928, is hosted by the students of COEP. This event showcases around 165 boats, including the Eighter, one of the oldest boats. The 95th edition of the Regatta was held on March 26, 2023. COEP Boat Club's Regatta is a display of various kinds of boats, kayaks, punts, shell boats and scull boats.

MindSpark
MindSpark, established in 2007, is the annual technical festival hosted by the college. It features approximately 50 events across various engineering disciplines and receives support from industrial sponsors who also collaborate with COEP for placements.
ZEST
ZEST is the annual sports festival of COEP Technological University, held since 2002. It attracts participation from over 70 colleges across the country and includes more than 20 sports played on the COEP Playground. ZEST also hosts events like Cyclothon, Marathon, Self-Defence Workshops, Fitness Sessions, and Sportsdeck Sessions.
Impressions
Impressions, the annual cultural festival of CoEP, takes place in the second week of December and lasts for three days. It serves as a platform for students in Dance, Music, Theater, Art, and Fashion to showcase their talents.
Technical and Robotics Clubs
The Computer Society of India (CSI) Student Chapter of College of Engineering Pune (COEP), established in October 2018, is the college's largest technical chapter. It organizes workshops, competitions, technical symposiums, and guest lectures.
COEP's Robotics Team, represented by the Robot Study Circle (RSC), collaborates with Siemens PLM, Janatics Pneumatics, Schmalz India, Pepperl & Fuchs, and Robolab Technologies. The team has won awards, including the national ABU Robocon in 2017, and represented India at the International Robocon in Tokyo, Japan.

Other Initiatives
The satellite team, also known as CSAT, is CoEP's satellite initiative. They worked on project Swayam a 1-U picosatellite which was launched by ISRO on June 22, 2016. The Aerial Robot Study Circle (ARSC) is a student club dedicated to advancing aerial robotics. The COEP's Free Software Users Group (COFSUG) promotes the use and development of free and open-source software.
