Illinois State University Commencement: A Comprehensive Guide

Illinois State University (ISU) offers comprehensive commencement ceremonies and graduate recognition events to celebrate the accomplishments of its students. Commencement Ceremonies

Commencement is a significant ceremony that formally celebrates a student's graduation. It marks the culmination of years of hard work and dedication. ISU holds commencement ceremonies in December and May to accommodate students graduating in the fall, spring, and summer semesters.

Timing of Ceremonies:

Undergraduate students completing degree requirements during the fall semester are eligible to participate in the winter (December) commencement ceremony.
Undergraduate students completing degree requirements during the spring or summer semesters can participate in the spring (May) commencement ceremony.
Master's students expecting to earn a degree in the Spring or Summer should participate in the May commencement ceremony; those earning a degree in the Fall should participate in the December ceremony.
Doctoral students should participate in the ceremony during or immediately after the semester in which they earn the degree.

Registration:

Registration for Commencement is mandatory for all students who wish to participate. Detailed instructions and deadlines for registration are available on the university's website.

Voluntary Participation:

Participation in the commencement ceremony is entirely voluntary. Students who choose not to attend the ceremony will still receive their degrees upon fulfilling all academic requirements.

Certificate Students:

Graduate Recognition Ceremonies

In addition to the traditional commencement ceremonies, ISU offers several graduate recognition ceremonies that celebrate the diversity and achievements of specific student groups. These ceremonies are celebrations of the accomplishments and successes of our students. These events provide a more intimate and culturally relevant setting for students to be recognized. Participation in these ceremonies is completely voluntary and does not take the place of University commencement. Any graduating student is welcome to participate in these events.

APIM Ceremony:

The APIM ceremony is a celebration of Asian Pacific Islander, Indian, and Middle Eastern graduates. This event honors the cultural heritage and academic achievements of students from these diverse backgrounds.

Nuestros Logros Ceremony:

Nuestros Logros is a celebration of Latinx graduates. This ceremony recognizes the contributions and accomplishments of Latinx students and their families.

Lavender Ceremony:

The Lavender ceremony celebrates LGBTQIA+ graduates. It is a special occasion to honor the achievements and resilience of LGBTQIA+ students and their allies.

Umoja Ceremony:

Umoja is a celebration for Illinois State students of African descent and from the African diaspora. This celebration is sponsored by the Umoja Community Forum, a coalition of Black faculty, staff, alumni, and students. Umoja is a celebration of Black graduates. It acknowledges the unique challenges and triumphs of Black students and their contributions to the university community.

Application for Graduation

All students must formally apply to be audited for graduation or completion of their degree requirements. This process ensures that all academic criteria have been met and that the degree can be officially conferred. Complete the paper graduation application.

Application Process:

To apply for completion of degrees/certificates, you must complete the following steps by the dates listed. Specific deadlines are set for each semester, and students must adhere to these deadlines to ensure timely processing of their graduation. If using the Word Degree Audit form, do not save it as a PDF document, leave it in the Word format to send it electronically to your advisor.

Meet Program Requirements: Students must meet all program requirements and apply for the degree or certificate by the deadlines for the session in which they meet the requirements in order to earn their degree or certificate.
Complete the Application Form: Students must complete the official graduation application form, available from the university's registrar or academic advising office.
Submit Required Documents: Along with the application form, students may need to submit other documents, such as transcripts or program completion forms.
Pay the Completion Fee: A $40 fee is due with your application for completing a degree. This fee is for processing of the degree, not for your participation in any commencement ceremony. You only need to pay the completion fee once for each degree.

Degree Honors

Degree Honors may be earned by undergraduate degree-seeking students who have demonstrated exceptional academic performance throughout their studies.
