Eligibility Requirements for the Educational Scholarship

There are two categories of scholarships available, each with its own set of eligibility requirements:

Educational Scholarship (for High School Seniors Only)

Must be a CommonWealth member or have a parent/guardian who is a member.
Must be a high school senior planning to attend an accredited school.
Must be actively involved in community service.

Higher Education Scholarship

Must be a CommonWealth member for over one year.
Must be over 18 years old.
Must be enrolled in college or trade school.
Must be actively involved in community service.

How to Apply for the CommonWealth Central Credit Union Scholarship

To apply, you can complete an essay application or create a video (maximum 3 minutes).

The credit union offers applicants the option to submit a video instead of an essay. The video must be a maximum of 3 minutes long and address, at the very least, each essay prompt. Applicants are encouraged to share anything and everything about their story.

They encourage applicants to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each year to ensure they take full advantage of grants and other federal aid they may be eligible to receive.

Private Student Loans

Private student loans can serve as a way to fill the funding gap between the cost of attending school and the amount of federal loans, grants, and scholarships available. However, CommonWealth Central Credit Union advises that private student loans should be used as supplemental funding after exhausting all other sources of financial aid, including grants, scholarships, and federal student loans. Federal loans often offer more attractive terms compared to most other borrowing options, including private student loans.

Student Loan Refinancing

Student loan refinancing provides the ability to consolidate current student loans and potentially lower the interest rate.
