Navigating Student Loans and Financial Wellness

College represents a significant investment, and CommonWealth Central Credit Union provides resources to help members navigate the complexities of financing their education. They encourage applicants to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each year to ensure they take full advantage of grants and other federal aid they may be eligible to receive.

Private Student Loans

Private student loans can serve as a way to fill the funding gap between the cost of attending school and the amount of federal loans, grants, and scholarships available. However, CommonWealth Central Credit Union advises that private student loans should be used as supplemental funding after exhausting all other sources of financial aid, including grants, scholarships, and federal student loans. Federal loans often offer more attractive terms compared to most other borrowing options, including private student loans.

Student Loan Refinancing

Student loan refinancing provides the ability to consolidate current student loans and potentially lower the interest rate. CommonWealth Central Credit Union offers student loan refinancing options, with limits up to \$125,000 in undergraduate private student loan debt and up to \$175,000 in graduate private student loan debt.

While refinancing federal loans is an option, it's important to note that you may lose certain benefits associated with your federal loans by doing so.

Repayment Options

CommonWealth Central Credit Union may offer various repayment options, such as an Interest-Only Repayment plan: 4 years of interest-only payments followed by Level Repayment for the remaining 11 years.

Financial Wellness Resources

Recognizing that financial literacy is essential for success, CommonWealth Central Credit Union provides resources covering a wide range of topics, from budgeting to Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs). These resources are designed to empower members to make informed financial decisions.
