Coppin State University Basketball: A Legacy of Resilience and Triumph

Coppin State University, located in Baltimore, Maryland, boasts a rich basketball history for both its men's and women's teams. As members of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), the Coppin State Eagles have experienced periods of struggle and significant success, marked by conference championships and NCAA Tournament appearances.

Women's Basketball: From Humble Beginnings to MEAC Dominance

The Coppin State Eagles women's basketball team began their journey in 1985. The program faced immediate challenges, enduring a winless inaugural season, losing all 25 games. The team's first victory came 11 games into their second season, which would be their only win that year.

The Turning Point: 1990-91 Season

The 1990-91 season marked a turning point for the program. The Eagles achieved their first winning season with a 19-8 record. More significantly, they captured the MEAC Tournament title, defeating Delaware State, South Carolina State, and North Carolina A&T. Although MEAC Tournament winners were not invited to the NCAA Tournament at that time, the Eagles celebrated their first-ever MEAC title.

Continued Success and NCAA Tournament Appearances

Two seasons later, the Eagles shared the MEAC regular-season title, finishing with a 20-9 record (12-4 in MEAC play). They shared the title with South Carolina State and Florida A&M. However, they fell to South Carolina State in the MEAC Tournament's third round.

In 2005, the Eagles achieved a remarkable feat by winning both the regular season and tournament titles. They finished with a 23-8 record (15-3 in MEAC play) and defeated Norfolk State in the MEAC final. This victory secured their first NCAA Tournament berth. They continued their dominance the following year (2006), winning both the regular season and tournament titles again, earning their second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. The Eagles made their third NCAA Tournament appearance in four years after defeating North Carolina A&T in the tournament final.
