The Role of a Cosmetology Instructor
A Cosmetology Instructor is a trained professional who teaches students the skills and techniques needed to become successful cosmetologists. The role of a Cosmetology Instructor is not only to teach technical skills, but also to provide guidance and support to students as they navigate the cosmetology industry. This may include helping students develop their portfolios, preparing them for state licensure exams, and connecting them with job opportunities after graduation.
Cosmetology Instructors may work in beauty schools, vocational schools, or community colleges, and they may also be self-employed or work in salons or spas.
Core Responsibilities
The Cosmetology Instructor is responsible to the Division Dean of Business & Industrial Technology for the delivery of quality instruction and management of students enrolled in Cosmetology courses and advisement of students in the Cosmetology Diploma Program. In addition to these core responsibilities, cosmetology instructors typically undertake a range of duties:
- Curriculum Development and Adaptation: Learning and adapting the course curriculum to meet the evolving needs of the cosmetology industry. In addition to teaching, Cosmetology Instructors may also be responsible for curriculum development, evaluation, and assessment of student progress.
- Instruction and Training: Teaching students the various cosmetology skills, including instruction in hair cutting, styling, coloring, and chemical processes, as well as makeup application, skin care, and nail care. They will prepare students for entry-level Cosmetologist positions in salons, spas, and self-employment and will also provide State Licensure preparation.
- Assessment and Evaluation: Setting tests, grading work, and evaluating student progress to ensure they are meeting the required standards.
- Mentorship and Guidance: Mentoring students, providing guidance and support as they develop their skills and prepare for their careers. This may include helping students develop their portfolios, preparing them for state licensure exams, and connecting them with job opportunities after graduation.
- Classroom Management: Maintaining a positive and productive learning environment in the classroom.
- Administrative Tasks: They may also be involved in the administration and management of the program, including budgeting, scheduling, and staffing.

The Importance of Licensure
Upon satisfactory completion of the program students must pass a written and practical test with the State of Georgia. Preparing students for state licensure exams is a critical aspect of the cosmetology instructor's role.

Compensation and Program Costs
*The amounts shown above include costs for the entire program, assuming normal time to completion. Financing for this program may be available through grants, scholarships, loans (federal and private) and institutional financing plans. Normal completion time for a full time student is 7 months.
