CARES Act Funding and Emergency Financial Aid
In response to the coronavirus pandemic, the Department of Education provided CRAS with limited grant funding through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Securities (CARES) Act. This funding was specifically designated for providing emergency financial aid grants to students to help with expenses related to the disruption of campus operations, such as housing, food, and other living costs.
To be eligible for these emergency financial aid grants, students must be eligible to participate in programs under Section 484 in Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 (HEA). Generally, students who have filed a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and have established general eligibility are considered eligible.
CRAS received a total of \$463,497 in CARES Act funding for emergency grants to students. The initial allocation was based on a student population of 454, excluding 4 international students who weren't eligible for the grant. The remaining 450 students were deemed eligible if their completed FAFSA confirmed they met all general eligibility requirements.

Initially, CRAS allocated 75% of the funds (\$347,623) for immediate disbursement to students, resulting in a disbursement amount of \$772.50 per student. Furthermore, students were given the opportunity to submit applications requesting CARES Act grant funds for additional expenses related to changes in instruction due to the coronavirus. On July 15, 2020, CRAS committed an additional \$99,000 of the remaining CARES Act grants for students who were still enrolled from the initial selection.
