This article delves into the specifics of CU Boulder's Summer Session tuition, providing a comprehensive overview of costs, fees, and related financial information.

A Vibrant Student Body and Campus Life

CU Boulder students are often described as "outdoorsy, outgoing, and always up for anything." They "love to be outside and often will spend their weekends in the mountains." Summer Session Tuition: An Overview

Tuition and fee rates for CU Boulder's Summer Session are based on several factors, including residency classification, guarantee group, college/school/program or area of study, type of degree, and the number of credit hours. Notably, the flat rate for undergraduate out-of-state and international tuition that applies during the fall and spring semesters does not apply in the summer. The rates discussed here pertain specifically to Boulder Main Campus classes; courses taken through Continuing Education or at other CU campuses have separate tuition and fee structures. It is also essential to recognize that tuition and fee rates are subject to change.

Additional Costs to Consider

Tuition and fees are not the only expenses to factor into the cost of attending CU Boulder. The full cost of attendance also encompasses housing and food, books and supplies, personal expenses, transportation, and medical insurance.

Financial Aid and Tuition Benefits

College Opportunity Fund (COF)

Eligible undergraduate students attending a Colorado public institution may apply for the College Opportunity Fund (COF), created by the Colorado Legislature. Students may be eligible to apply their COF stipend to their Summer Session tuition if they’ve done the following:

  • Applied for COF
  • Authorized use of the stipend through Buff Portal
  • Not exceeded their lifetime credit hour limit

Tuition Benefit for Faculty and Staff

CU Boulder faculty and staff may be eligible for tuition benefits for themselves or their dependents during the summer. Dependents can attend a CU employee’s home campus and receive nine waived credit hours or attend a different CU campus and receive a tuition waiver of \$270 per credit hour, up to nine hours. The Tuition Assistance Benefit applies only to the cost of credit hours.

Health Insurance

Continuing Education students enrolled for credit courses may be eligible to purchase health insurance through Wardenburg Health Center. Students must also purchase the optional student fees (for the bus pass, recreation center, etc.) in order to enroll in health insurance. During the fall and spring semesters students are automatically enrolled if they are:

  • a degree-seeking student,
  • enrolled in at least one Continuing Education course, and
  • enrolled in 6 or more credits as an undergraduate or enrolled in 1 or more credits as a graduate student.

Students enrolled in a health insurance plan for the spring semester are also covered during the summer. New summer students are not automatically enrolled in an insurance plan, but have the opportunity to purchase coverage at the Wardenburg Health Center by July 1. Payment is due at enrollment. Students automatically enrolled in the CU Gold SHIP during the fall and spring semesters may waive the health insurance plan and fees via Buff Portal.

Mandatory Student Fees

Students enrolled in summer classes who are assessed full fees will have Rec Center access for the duration of the classes. Non-fee-paying and base-fee-paying students (e.g., doctoral candidates, graduate status D) can purchase a summer membership. All students on graduate student assistant appointments of 20% or greater will receive full coverage of mandatory student fees. The exact amount of fees is determined by enrollment level and graduate status. Waivers will apply to the student account when the appointment is applied. The fees assessed for Summer Session non-degree students depend on whether you are taking main campus in-person or online courses:

  • Students taking one or more main campus in-person classes are charged full mandatory fees per the campus fee schedule. These fees give students access to the RTD bus system and other campus services.
  • Students whose main campus summer schedule consists of only online classes are charged online fees.

Billing and Payment Information

Billing and tuition deadlines for Summer Session are determined by enrollment date, not class start and end dates. Bills become available in Buff Portal (CUBill&Pay for authorized payers) by the second Thursday of each month starting in May after you register for classes. Payment is due on the 5th of the following month. Postmarks and post-dated checks are not honored.

If you do not receive a notification, you are still responsible for paying your bill on time. Authorized payers can view, print, and pay tuition bills online.

Payment Options and Late Fees

The university encourages payment from a checking or savings account to avoid a nonrefundable 2.85% service fee for each credit/debit card payment. All checks containing restrictive endorsements are null and void and nonbinding on the university. All late payments are subject to a late charge (up to \$50) and finance charges of 1% per month on the unpaid balance. If your payment is returned from your financial institution for any reason, it is considered nonpayment, and nonpayment penalties may apply.

Confirmation Deposits

New degree students must pay a \$200 confirmation deposit at least 24 hours before they’re allowed to register for courses. If the student withdraws during their first semester at CU, they are not eligible for a confirmation deposit refund. Otherwise, confirmation deposits will apply to student accounts during their first semester of enrollment. If a student withdraws or drops all their classes, the student may need to pay the confirmation deposit again upon returning to CU before they can register for classes, depending on CU Boulder admission policy.
