Navigating Scholarships at Dallas Baptist University: A Comprehensive Guide
Cost is a significant consideration for students applying to college. As college expenses rise, many students rely on financial aid. Scholarships, provided by various private and public organizations, can significantly offset these costs. Dallas Baptist University (DBU), as a Christ-centered institution, offers a range of scholarship opportunities to support its students' educational aspirations. This article provides a detailed overview of the scholarships available at DBU, their requirements, and helpful tips for applying.
Understanding the Landscape of College Scholarships
Various private and public organizations provide and pay for college scholarships. Most scholarships have different guidelines and deadlines, some as soon as a year before college starts. Organizations providing the scholarship typically offer step-by-step instructions for applying for a scholarship. Scholarships.com organizes them by GPA, ethnicity, and residing state. After being accepted into a school, you can search for scholarships on your College Board account. The Department of Education awards an estimated $46 billion in scholarship money annually. If you want to apply for a federal scholarship, fill out the FAFSA application.
Types of Scholarships at DBU
DBU offers a diverse array of scholarships, catering to different student profiles and needs. These scholarships can be broadly categorized as academic, private, church-matching, and Christian-based scholarships.
Academic Scholarships
Academic, or merit, scholarships are awarded to those who have exceeded a school's or organization's expectations with grades or noteworthy skills in an area. At Dallas Baptist University, academic scholarships range from $8,000 to $14,000 a year and go toward paying for a student's tuition. DBU academic scholarships are only available for programs for which regular, undergraduate block tuition is assessed. These scholarships cannot be applied to online-only programs. You may only qualify for one academic scholarship, but DBU will offer you the highest dollar-value scholarship for which you are eligible. A student may not receive an academic scholarship of higher value than their original award from their first year as a student. Academic scholarships for first-year students are based on academic performance in high school, the strength of your high school's curriculum, and test scores.
Students who make DBU’s honors program can receive an additional $2,000 a year. Eligibility for the University Honors Program Scholarship is determined by the DBU Application for Admission, the University Honors Program Application, and requires admittance/enrollment into the University Honors Program.

Application Tips for DBU Scholarships
Cost is often one of the most heavily considered factors when students start the college application process. With the cost of college continually rising, many students depend on financial aid while attending school. If you're looking for extra money for school, brainstorm what makes you unique, your passions, and your identity.
- Start Early: Most scholarships have different guidelines and deadlines, some as soon as a year before college starts. Start your application processes early and ensure you provide all necessary details and documents on time.
- Tell Your Story: If you are writing an essay for a scholarship, be sure to tell a personal story that clearly showcases your strengths, leadership, and community involvement.
- Seek Recommendations: For scholarships like the Christian Leadership Scholarship, secure strong recommendations from individuals who can attest to your character and abilities. Recommenders must use DBU CLS Recommendation Forms. Referral letters will not be accepted.
- Explore All Options: The university also offers athletic scholarships, and it is worth researching any scholarships offered by the specific department of your intended major.
How to Apply
If you want to apply for a federal scholarship, fill out the FAFSA application. The new simplified 2024-25 FAFSA application will be available after December 31, 2023. To qualify for assistance under any of the loan programs, the student must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the appropriate academic year. These forms are available online at www.dbu.edu/financialaid.
To be eligible, parents and students must not currently be in default on any Federal Student Loan nor owe a refund on any federal grant. The parent's credit history is evaluated prior to approval of the loan. If the PLUS Loan is denied, the student may then be eligible to borrow additional funds under the Federal Unsubsidized Direct Loan program. Additional information about the Federal Direct PLUS Loan is available from the Office of Financial Aid. Information and an application are available online at www.hhloans.com or www.elmselect.com.
Click on the Begin Application button to start your application process. It is the responsibility of the applicant to complete the application in one sitting.
