Navigating Transfer Credits to Dallas College: A Comprehensive Guide

Transferring to a new college can be a complex process, especially when it comes to understanding how your previously earned credits will be accepted. If you're considering Dallas College, this guide will provide you with a detailed overview of their transfer credit requirements, ensuring a smoother transition to your new academic journey. Dallas College is committed to offering students a quality education - starting with quality faculty. Academic core courses are taught by professors who have at least a master's degree; more than 25% have Ph.D.'s. With classes offered during the day, at night, and on weekends, Dallas College makes it easy to balance school, work, and family.

Initial Steps for Transfer Students

The first step for any transfer student is to apply to Dallas College by following their admissions process. As a transfer student, you must request official transcripts from all colleges and universities you have previously attended before you can enroll at Dallas College. Having your transcripts helps us advise you about the classes you qualify to take and the classes that will best help you meet your goals. These transcripts must be sent directly from the institution to the Dallas College Admissions Office.

Important Considerations for Transcripts:

  • Timeliness: To comply with the Texas State Library and Archives Commission's state records and retention law, transcripts must be no older than three years from the date they were printed.
  • Official Documents: Only official transcripts are accepted.
  • All Institutions: Submit official transcripts from all higher education institutions attended, even if you believe the credits won't transfer.

Evaluation of Transfer Credits

Once Dallas College receives your official transcripts, an evaluation process begins to determine which credits will be accepted. You must submit to the Admissions Office all official transcripts from all higher education institutions before an evaluation can take place. Dallas College will inform transfer students of the amount of credit that will transfer prior to the end of the first academic term in which they are enrolled. Once the student has been notified that the credits have been evaluated, the student may look at the results on eConnect. Effective March 2013, lower-level transfer credits from other institutions are included on the official academic transcript.

Key Points about the Evaluation Process:

  • Notification: Dallas College will inform you of the amount of credit that will transfer before the end of your first academic term.
  • eConnect: You can view the results of your credit evaluation on eConnect after you've been notified.
  • Lower-Level Credits: Lower-level transfer credits from other institutions are included on the official academic transcript.

Transfer Credit Policies

Dallas College has specific policies regarding the acceptance of transfer credits. Generally, Dallas College will not accept junior and senior level coursework as transfer credit unless there is an approved articulation agreement with the specific four-year college or university.

Specific Policies:

  • Junior/Senior Level Coursework: Generally, Dallas College does not accept junior and senior level coursework as transfer credit unless an articulation agreement is in place with the specific four-year institution.
  • 25% Rule: You must earn at least 25% of the credit hours required for graduation through instruction at Dallas College.

Requirements for Foreign Credentials:

  • Original and Translation: Submit the original credentials along with a certified English translation.
  • Credential Evaluation: An official evaluation of foreign credentials must be completed before transfer credit can be granted. The student is responsible for arranging for credential evaluation.
  • Approved Services: A list of acceptable professional evaluation services is available in the catalog or the Office of the Registrar. Official transcript evaluators who provide service to the campuses will complete course-by-course evaluations as needed for degree or program planning.

Transfer Pathways and Partnerships

Dallas College has partnered with many four-year universities to provide you with transfer pathways for most of the top university transfer majors. We’ve partnered with several universities locally and across the nation to streamline your transfer process. Some offer amazing benefits.

Tools and Resources:

  • Transferology: Transferology lets you easily see what course equivalents you’ll receive, and which Dallas College classes are recognized at other institutions.
  • Transfer Plans: Transfer Plans outline the recommended coursework offered at Texas community colleges for each UT Dallas degree program.
  • Partnership Agreements: Dallas College has developed partnership agreements with a number of institutions to ensure the applicability of credit in transfer.

Guarantees and Limitations on Transferability

Dallas College guarantees its Associate of Arts and Associate of Science graduates the transferability of course credit to Texas public colleges and universities. Students pursuing these degrees will complete Dallas College's Core Curriculum. By Texas State Law, the entire Core should transfer as a block to all Texas public colleges and universities to take the place of the core curriculum of the receiving transfer institution. Another means of ensuring the transferability and applicability of all courses within an Associate of Arts or an Associate of Science is to follow specific degree plans in specific majors that are called Fields of Study. A Field of Study plan has the approval of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, toward the general education requirements at a Texas public college or university. No university is required to accept more than 66 semester credit hours of academic credits earned by a student in a community college. Universities, however, may choose to accept additional credit hours. Also, all public colleges and universities must offer at least 42 semester credit hours of academic courses that are substantially equivalent to courses listed in the Lower Division Academic Course Guide manual including those that fulfill the lower-division portion of the institution's core curriculum.

Guaranteed Transfer:

  • Associate of Arts/Science: Graduates with these degrees are guaranteed transferability of course credit to Texas public colleges and universities.
  • Core Curriculum: The entire Core Curriculum should transfer as a block to Texas public colleges and universities.
  • Fields of Study: Following specific Fields of Study degree plans ensures the transferability and applicability of courses.

Limitations:

  • Credit Hour Limit: No university is required to accept more than 66 semester credit hours from a community college.
  • University Discretion: Universities may choose to accept additional credit hours beyond the 66-hour limit.

Additional Considerations

Several other factors can influence the transferability of your credits. Limitations of total number of credits accepted in transfer, grades required, relevant grade point average and duration of transferability apply as stated in the catalog of the receiving institution.

Other Factors:

  • Developmental/Remedial Courses: Developmental or remedial studies will not be considered for credit.
  • Credit by Exam: As credit is awarded after admission, credit by exam is not considered as part of an applicant’s transferable GPA or transfer hours for admissions. Official scores must be sent directly to UT Dallas from the testing agency, and only scores from exams taken within the past ten years will be considered for credit.
  • Military Credit: Military veterans who enroll at UT Dallas and meet certain requirements are eligible to receive undergraduate college credit for their time in the service. Eligible veterans who enroll at the University receive college credit for up to twelve semester credit hours of lower-division elective coursework.
  • UT Dallas Transfer: If you have taken college coursework outside of UT Dallas, you can search transfer equivalencies by the institution you attended to determine how your courses could potentially transfer to UT Dallas.
