Data Science Scholarships for International Students
Pursuing a degree in data science can be a significant investment, but numerous scholarships are available to ease the financial burden, especially for international students. These scholarships, offered by universities, governments, and organizations, can cover tuition fees, living expenses, and other associated costs. This article explores various data science scholarship opportunities for international students, focusing on eligibility criteria, benefits, and application processes.
Addressing Underrepresentation in AI and Data Science
Many scholarships prioritize women, Black students, disabled students, and individuals from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. This focus aims to ensure that the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data science reflects the diversity of society. For example, the University of Birmingham's AI and Data Science Scholarship specifically targets these underrepresented groups.
University of Birmingham's AI and Data Science Scholarship
The University of Birmingham previously offered an AI and Data Science Scholarship designed to support under-represented groups in the field. This scholarship sought to address the skills gap and promote diversity within the UK AI and data science workforce.
Eligibility and Prioritization:
The scholarship prioritized:
- Women: Encouraging greater female participation in STEM fields.
- Black students: Addressing the underrepresentation of Black students (5% of new Postgraduate taught entrants in 21/22) and the significant attainment gap (23.4% in 20/21). The University of Birmingham had 426 new entrants in 22/23.
- Disabled students: Supporting students with physical or mental impairments that have a ‘substantial’ and ‘long-term’ negative effect on their ability to do normal daily activities, as defined by the Equality Act 2010. ‘Substantial’ means more than minor or trivial, such as taking significantly longer to complete daily tasks. ‘Long-term’ means lasting 12 months or more.
- Students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds: Considering factors such as the type of secondary school attended and estrangement from parents. An irreconcilably estranged person is someone who has not had any verbal or written contact with their parents for a significant period of time, and this is unlikely to change.
- Gypsy, Roma and Traveller: Encompassing a wide range of individuals who may be defined in relation to their ethnicity, heritage, way of life and how they self-identify.
Application Process:
- Study Application: Applicants must have already submitted a study application for an eligible course at the University of Birmingham through the course's online application portal.
- Scholarship Application: A separate application was required for the AI and Data Science Scholarship.
- Mathematics Pre-Sessional Bootcamp: The university offered a Mathematics Pre-sessional Bootcamp to all Home and International students that wished to study on one of the nine above courses. The bootcamp took place online between Tuesday 27 August and Friday 20 September 2024.
Selection Criteria:
Applications were initially reviewed using a points-based system, with awards allocated based on merit. Meeting the eligibility criteria did not guarantee success. Aptitude and skills were assessed through an aptitude test.

Scholarship Coverage:
Successful applicants received a £10,000 cash payment (in two installments) to alleviate barriers to entry, covering costs such as course fees, materials, living expenses, childcare, or transport. The scholarship was paid directly into the awardee's bank account in two £5,000 installments at the start of semester one and two.
Important Notes:
- The University reserved the right to close the scholarship scheme early if all scholarships were allocated.
- International students were not eligible for the scholarship funding, which was aimed at addressing the skills gap and increasing diversity in the UK AI and data science workforce. However, international students were able to apply for the online mathematics pre-sessional bootcamp.
- The scholarship could not be deferred or held in conjunction with other funding.
Mathematics Pre-Sessional Bootcamp
To support students, the University of Birmingham offered a Mathematics Pre-sessional Bootcamp. The application for the Mathematics Pre-sessional Bootcamp was separate from the application form for the AI and Data Science Scholarship.
