The Davidson Wildcats basketball team represents the college in NCAA Division I competition, currently as a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference. The Davidson Wildcats are currently coached by Matt McKillop, who is in his third season after succeeding his father, Bob McKillop, after the 2021-22 season. The team plays its home games in the John M. Belk Arena.
A Tradition of Tournament Appearances
The Wildcats have a strong tradition of postseason play, having appeared in 15 NCAA Tournaments. Their most memorable run came in 2008 when they defeated Gonzaga, Georgetown, and Wisconsin to reach the Elite Eight. The Wildcats narrowly missed a trip to the Final Four, falling to eventual champion Kansas in a close 59-57 contest.
In addition to their NCAA Tournament success, Davidson has also participated in nine National Invitation Tournaments (NIT) and one College Basketball Invitational (CBI).

The Lefty Driesell Era: A Powerhouse is Born
Under the guidance of coach Lefty Driesell, the Wildcats became a force to be reckoned with in the 1960s. During an eight-year span, the team achieved seven 20-win seasons. The 1964-65 team, featuring future NBA No. 1 pick Fred Hetzel, was ranked No. 4 in the AP preseason poll.
Honoring Excellence: Jersey Retirement Policy
Davidson College has a specific policy regarding the retirement of jersey numbers. To be eligible for this honor, players must have earned a bachelor's degree from the college.
While several players have had their jerseys retired, Stephen Curry holds the distinction of being the first to have his number retired. Curry earned this honor after completing his bachelor's degree in May 2022. The college retired Steph Curry's No. 30 in an August ceremony.

Currently a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference, Davidson continues to build upon its impressive basketball legacy. The team last played in the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament in 2022.
