Early Athletic Prowess
Dean College started its athletic program in the 1890s. In these early years, athletic apparel looked quite different from today's uniforms. For example, women’s basketball uniforms consisted of dresses and bows.
Baseball's Storied Past
Dean College baseball has a rich history, including a Hall of Fame catcher, Gabby Hartnett, and Eddie Grant, the first major leaguer to die in combat during World War l. Gabby Hartnett was inducted into the MLB Hall of Fame in 1955 and was the catcher during the historic moment Babe Ruth called the shot during the 1932 World Series.
A National Championship and Football Success
Dean's men's soccer team went undefeated in 1961-1962 and won the National Championship. The football team also experienced huge wins in 2007, 2008 and 2009.
The Bulldogs: A Footballing Force
The Dean Bulldogs football team represents Dean College in college football at the NCAA Division III level. The Bulldogs are members of the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC), having joined the conference in 2025. Before this, Dean competed in the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) from 2017 to 2024.

Coaching Staff
Luke Bakanowsky is the current head coach of the program. Steve Tirrell resigned as head coach in December 2021. Andrae Murphy '07 was chosen to lead the Football Program.
Notable Figures and Connections
Louis Pieri, a graduate of Dean and former member of the board of trustees, was once a co-owner of the Boston Celtics. Dean’s gymnasium was named after Pieri in the 1960s. The Boston Celtics once played at Dean.
