However, adversity struck again at the beginning of his senior year when Freeman was hospitalized with an illness, forcing him to miss the first two months of classes. Despite this setback, he persevered, determined to overcome the challenges and complete his degree.

The judge's ultimatum presented Freeman with a third, unspoken option: to revert to his old ways and return to a life of incarceration. However, Virginia State University provided him with the opportunity to break free from that cycle and create a better future for himself.
