DePaul University Study Abroad Programs: A World of Opportunities

DePaul University offers a diverse array of study abroad programs designed to provide students with invaluable international experiences, foster cross-cultural understanding, and enhance their academic and professional development. From short-term seminars to semester-long immersions, these programs cater to various interests and academic disciplines, allowing students to explore the world while earning college credit.

Semester/Term-Long Programs

Australian Catholic University (ACU) Exchange Program

DePaul students have the opportunity to enroll full-time at Australian Catholic University (ACU) through a study abroad exchange program. ACU, an Australian government-funded public university, welcomes students of all beliefs, nationalities, and cultures. With six campuses and a wide range of courses across six faculties-Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, Theology and Philosophy, Health Sciences, and Law-ACU offers a diverse academic environment. DePaul students typically take 3-4 units (courses), totaling 30-40 ACU credit points per semester.

College Year in Athens (CYA)

Offered during the Fall quarter or the Academic Year, this term-long program allows students to study in Athens through Greece's renowned College Year in Athens (CYA). Coursework and excursions juxtapose the history and contributions of ancient Greece with the Greece of today, a country situated geographically, socially and culturally at the confluence of Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Students earn a total of 32 credits for five courses through CYA. Two courses are required: a Modern Greek language course and an Art and Archaeology course. The remaining three electives are worth 6 credits each and may be chosen from CYA's wide range of disciplines, which include Art and Archaeology, Classical Languages, Environmental Studies, Ethnography, History, International Relations, Literature, Modern Greek Language, Philosophy, Political Science, and Religion.

Tsinghua University Program in China

This term-long study abroad program in China is offered during the Winter-Spring quarters at Tsinghua University in conjunction with Syracuse University. Designed to address the complexities of contemporary China and its languages, the academic program begins with a two-week field study seminar to Beijing, Xi'an, and Shanghai, followed by classroom study at Tsinghua. Students reside in single dormitory rooms on Tsinghua's modern campus.

Short-Term Programs

Argentina and Chile: History, Culture, Economics, and Politics

This short-term December intercession program explores the history, culture, economics, and politics of Argentina and Chile. The program may include meetings with the expatriate community and Consular officials, as well as visits to cultural and historical institutions. The Program includes two coordinated courses taken in the fall and winter quarters.

Latin American Law and Legal Systems Seminar

This short-term seminar introduces students to the basic framework of Latin American Law and legal systems, as well as the key principles of international business law necessary for advising clients doing business in the region.

Viticulture and Viniculture Seminar

This short-term seminar introduces students to all aspects of viticulture and viniculture, as well as the geography of major wine-producing regions of the world. The abroad portion focuses on more in-depth work related to a specific region, with introductions to that area’s viticulture.

Global Advertising and Marketing Agencies in Argentina

This short-term program provides students with the opportunity to visit major global and local advertising and marketing agencies, as well as media companies in Argentina, to learn about practices and challenges associated with the development of global campaigns.

Modernism in Austria and Switzerland

This short-term seminar takes students to Austria and Switzerland to develop a more complete understanding of modernism and how it has impacted visual culture and design.

Information Technology (IT) in Brazil

This short-term December intercession program is designed for students from all colleges. Visiting three cities in Brazil, the course focuses on Information Technology (IT) in Brazil from multiple perspectives. Students learn about the history and development of IT in Brazil, the role it plays in economic development, as well as its socio-cultural impact. In addition to seeing some of the highlights of the city, participants will conduct a number of site visits to businesses, government offices, non-governmental organizations, and institutions of higher learning. The program starts with several pre-departure sessions and continues through the winter quarter with meetings scheduled upon return.

Urban Planning in Curitiba, Brazil

This short-term program is designed to provide students with an understanding of social area analysis, neighborhood change, land use, and other topics by exploring the planning initiatives underway in Curitiba, Brazil, one of the most innovative urban areas in South America. The program site serves as an "urban laboratory" to evaluate a wide range of policies intended to enhance the efficiency and "livability" of a metropolitan region, improve public services, and support the development of critical infrastructure. At the host institution, the Pontificia Universidade Catolica do Parana (PUCPR), students critically evaluate how various strategies can be used to promote harmonious development and economic improvement in complex metropolitan areas involving many different units of government. They also compare the strategies used in Curitiba with those used in Chicago.

International Criminal Law Seminar

This short-term seminar provides students the opportunity to witness the practice of international criminal law through visiting international criminal judicial mechanisms, attending trials, and interacting with a variety of professionals working in the international criminal law field.

Ottawa International Animation Festival Seminar

This short-term seminar is designed for students with an interest in attending the Ottawa International Animation Festival. Students will have the opportunity to learn about the state of animation worldwide while seeing screenings, attending industry events, and meeting animators, critics, teachers, and animation directors from around the world.

French Canada: Language and Culture

This short-term seminar is an introduction to the language and culture of French Canada, the third in the three-quarter beginning French sequence. The primary objective is to increase students’ French proficiency and develop their cultural knowledge.

Entrepreneurial Venture in Chile and Argentina

This short-term seminar will explore the intricate process of developing a business idea for an entrepreneurial venture in the unique business and social culture in Chile and Argentina.

Global Wine Industry in Chile

This short-term program will lead students to understand managerial practices in a global environment by studying the global wine industry and the role Chilean wines play in the world market.

Business in China: Ownership Structures

This business seminar to Beijing and Shanghai focuses on the evolution of ownership structures in China spurred by the country's membership in the World Trade Organization (WTO). Through visits to majority-Chinese owned companies, Joint Ventures between Chinese and foreign companies, as well as wholly foreign-owned companies, students have the opportunity to explore China's changing economic and regulatory structures and gain an understanding of how Chinese business culture varies across companies according to their different ownership structures.

Distributed Collaboration with Chinese IT Companies

This short-term seminar will provide students with insight into the cultural, technological, and logistical issues that arise with distributed or on-site collaboration with Chinese IT companies.

Cultural Transformations in China

This short-term seminar allows students to learn firsthand about the cultural transformations taking place in China by visiting two geographically and culturally distinct cities. It also provides students with an understanding of basic concepts and applications of psychology and human development from a cross-cultural perspective.

Social Entrepreneurship in Guizhou Province, China

This short-term seminar offers students an opportunity to explore the universality of social entrepreneurship concepts in the rich and foreign cultural setting of Guizhou Province, China.

Culture in Contemporary China

This short-term program will introduce students to the complexity of culture in contemporary China. Through careful and observant travel, critical reading, original research, collaboration, and documentation, students will engage with an increasingly important nation in global negotiations over the shape of the future.

China's Cultural Beliefs and Globalization

This short-term seminar aims to raise awareness among students about assumptions and values, democracy, and the role that China's cultural beliefs such as Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism play on the global stage. In light of China's influence on globalization and its increasing economic power, along with its particular values, the course examines what it means to be a global citizen.

Study Arabic Language and Culture in Jordan

Students will take classes at the American University of Madaba and complete an internship in Amman.

Tanzania: Grassroots Development

Program activities include participant observation/service learning, seminars at the Nelson Mandela Institute of Science and Technology and Mount Meru University, and cultural tours, including a trip to Mount Kilimanjaro. Also, students will visit a variety of community cooperatives, relief agencies, and/or governmental offices to gain appreciation for the challenges and opportunities confronting Tanzania and other African countries. Specific sites have been selected to provide the best demonstration of grassroots development from a Tanzanian perspective. Accommodations: Students will stay at the Catholic Relief Services Hostel in Arusha, Tanzania. It has a bath and mosquito netting. The gated compounds offer a medium level of security, a small cyber-center, gift shop and two restaurants. Shopping centers are nearby. Accommodations are very clean and comfortable.

Public-Policy Analysis and Public Service Management in Belgium

The Brussels, Belgium program allows students to broaden their perspective on public-policy analysis and public service management in an international context. The course explores how globalization is affecting national governments and traditional cultures while encouraging the creation of international non-profits and supra-national governing agencies. The purpose of this course is to expand student understanding of influence and impact of institutions that both comprise and interact with the European Union (EU). The course focuses on the “international public sector,” including the relationship of governments with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and the nonprofit/voluntary sector). It considers the role of the EU and North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) as agents of change throughout the world. The course provides an opportunity for both experiential learning as well as intellectual enrichment through an exploration of the strategies used to affect policy in international settings. Students can register as either MPS 575 or Independent Study. Plus, you can register for this either as a Winter or Spring course.

Watershed Development in India

(WOTR) is an award-winning nonprofit operating in six Indian states. WOTR works to address poverty by mobilizing the self-help capacities of individuals and groups to regenerate the eco-spaces they live in. The 6-day program with WOTR's headquarters in the city of Pune, Maharashtra, includes a 1-day visit to their Training Center in Darewadi village, which is the site of its first watershed development project.

Funding and Support

To help pay for travel fees, DePaul Study Abroad offers a range of scholarships, which you can apply for in your study abroad application. You can also apply for the Business Seminar Scholarship which awards $1,000 toward your program expenses.
