Dereck Lively II: From Duke Blue Devil to Dallas Maverick

Dereck Jerome Lively II, born on February 12, 2004, is an American professional basketball player currently playing for the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA. Before making his mark in the professional league, Lively honed his skills as a college basketball player for the Duke Blue Devils.

Early Life and High School Career

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Lively's connection to basketball runs deep in his family. His father, Dereck Lively, is a chef, while his mother, Kathy Phillips Drysdale, was a basketball star at Penn State. Drysdale holds the college's record for consecutive field goals made and ranks among the top 20 in rebounds and blocks. She also worked for the Philadelphia 76ers in their entertainment division and later served as the Penn State women’s basketball marketing manager. Sadly, Kathy Drysdale passed away on April 13, 2024.

Lively attended Westtown School in West Chester, Pennsylvania. There, he led his team to an impressive 31-7 record and secured the Pennsylvania Independent Schools Athletic Association state championship in 2022, defeating Perkiomen School, led by Ryan Dunn and Xaivian Lee. As a senior, he showcased his all-around abilities by averaging 14.0 points, 14.0 rebounds, and 4.5 blocks per game.

Lively was a consensus five-star recruit, consistently ranked as one of the top players in the 2022 class by major recruiting services like Rivals and ESPN. His exceptional talent and potential made him a highly sought-after prospect.

College Career at Duke

During his time with the Blue Devils, he played in 34 games and averaged 5.2 points on 65.8 percent shooting with 5.4 rebounds.
