Unlocking Opportunity: Understanding the Distinguished Tennessean Scholarship

The Distinguished Tennessean Scholarship Award (DTSA) represents a significant investment in the future of Tennessee, providing deserving students with the means to pursue higher education at the University of Tennessee (UT). Established in 2022, this scholarship program underscores UT’s dedication to making valuable education accessible and affordable to students across the state, shaping their experience with a rich student life. By recognizing exceptional academic achievement and a strong commitment to community engagement, the DTSA aims to empower the next generation of leaders from the Volunteer State.

Recognizing Tennessee's Best: Eligibility and Selection

The Distinguished Tennessean Scholarship is awarded to one outstanding student from each of the 95 counties in Tennessee. This ensures that talent from every corner of the state is recognized and supported. Eligibility for the scholarship is based on several key criteria, designed to identify students who have excelled both academically and as engaged members of their communities.

Those eligible must have a minimum 3.2 UT core weighted grade point average and demonstrate well-roundedness with a strong commitment to their community. Palmer easily fits those criteria. She’s ranked in the Top 10 in her class for four years and is a member of the school’s prestigious 30+ ACT Club. Palmer has been chosen as a WestStar Leadership participant, selected for the English National Beta Test, and served as a class officer.

Ella has additionally been a member of the UCHS Ethics Bowl team, the Beta Club, and the Pep Club while also working as an instructional leader in the Golden Tornado Marching Band. Her community service experience includes being a Camp Rock volunteer, working in the Chimes for Charity program, and as a volunteer for the Beta Club Trunk or Treat event. Palmer became a candidate for the award upon applying for admission to UT.

Financial Impact and Scholarship Combinations

The Distinguished Tennessean Scholarship is designed to alleviate the financial burden of higher education, allowing students to focus on their studies and personal growth. This scholarship can be combined with Pledge, Tennessee Connect, or HOPE to help cover the cost of housing, food, and other expenses. However, this award cannot be combined with other institutional merit scholarships, such as Volunteer, Orange & White, and Provost.

A Testament to Volunteer Spirit

The Distinguished Tennessean Scholarship is more than just a financial award; it is a recognition of the values and aspirations of the students who receive it. The university launched the Distinguished Tennessean Scholarship in fall 2022 with the goal of recognizing one student from each county across the state for exceptional academic performance, demonstrated community involvement and a passion for the Volunteer spirit. The recipients of this scholarship embody the spirit of service, leadership, and academic excellence that the University of Tennessee seeks to cultivate.

As Vice Provost for Enrollment Management Kari Alldredge notes, “The Distinguished Tennessean Scholarship is a reflection of how future Volunteers are lighting the way for others before their time on Rocky Top even begins. This year, it’s a privilege to recognize a Distinguished Tennessean from each of our 95 counties."

The Broader Scholarship Landscape at UT

In addition to the Distinguished Tennessean Scholarship, the university offers the Tri-Star Scholarship program, the Volunteer Scholarship, the Orange and White Scholarship and other institutional scholarships to Tennessee residents. These diverse scholarship opportunities reflect UT’s commitment to supporting students from all backgrounds and helping them achieve their academic goals.

Impact and Investment

Since then, the university has awarded upwards of $7 million to 278 Distinguished Tennessean Scholars. This substantial investment demonstrates UT's commitment to supporting Tennessee students and fostering the next generation of leaders.
