NCAA Division I Athletics: A Comprehensive Overview
NCAA Division I represents the highest level of intercollegiate athletics in the United States. This article provides a detailed look into the structure, classifications, and notable aspects of Division I, with a particular focus on football.
NCAA Division I Flag Football
NCAA Division I flag football is experiencing growth at the varsity level, setting it apart from other divisions. By the spring season of 2026, five varsity programs are expected to compete. In addition to varsity programs, over 35 club teams are active in flag football at Division I universities.
Division I Football Subdivisions: FBS and FCS
Division I football is further divided into two subdivisions: the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) and the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). The primary distinction between these lies in the provision of financial aid.
Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS)
Schools in Division I FBS can offer scholarship aid to a total of 85 players. They have the option to grant a full scholarship to each of these 85 players. The NCAA classifies FBS football as a "head-count" sport. This means that every player receiving any form of athletically-related aid counts against the 85-player limit.
Football Championship Subdivision (FCS)
FCS schools face limitations on financial assistance, capped at the equivalent of 63 full scholarships. FCS football is classified as an "equivalency" sport. These schools can grant partial scholarships but are limited to a total of 85 players receiving assistance. There is also an NCAA rule that mandates any multi-sport athlete who plays football and receives athletic aid is counted against the football limit. An exception exists for players in non-scholarship FCS programs who receive aid in another sport.

College Football Playoff (CFP)
Starting in 2014, the FBS began participating in a tournament called the College Football Playoff (CFP). This tournament culminates in a National Championship Game to determine the national champion. The CFP has been under contract with ESPN, the broadcaster of the games, from the 2014-2025 seasons. Initially, the CFP featured four teams from its inception in 2014 through the 2023 season. It expanded to 12 teams in 2024. Since the CFP is not sanctioned by the NCAA, FBS football remains the only sport without an NCAA-sanctioned champion.
Historical Context
The list of Division I teams includes all current and former FBS, Division I-A, Division I, University Division, and Major-College football teams since 1946. This was the year the NCAA began keeping continuous records of major football teams.
Athletic Nicknames
Many schools have different athletic nicknames for men's and women's teams. Often, the women's teams are indicated by preceding the main nickname with "Lady". Examples include LSU Lady Tigers and Tennessee Lady Vols. Two FBS schools nicknamed Cowboys, Oklahoma State and Wyoming, use Cowgirls for women's teams. Some schools have completely different nicknames for their women's teams, such as Hawaii Rainbow Wahine and Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters.
Conference Evolution: The Case of the Pac-12
The Pac-12 considers the Pacific Coast Conference (PCC) as part of its history. The PCC was established with different charter members and eventually disbanded due to crisis and scandal. Despite these differences, there is considerable continuity between the two leagues.
Geographic Distribution
Currently, 8 states (Alaska, Maine, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Vermont) and Washington, D.C. do not have Division I football programs.
