MATHia: An AI-Driven Math Coaching Solution

MATHia is Carnegie Learning's flagship AI-driven math coaching solution. MATHia utilizes machine learning to study how students interact with and think about math. An integral part of getting AI to understand the student learning experience is training MATHia to look at more than the student’s final answer. MATHia provides hyper-individualized support to students. Re-teaching skills a student has already mastered is a waste of time.

Providing Hyper-Individualized Support

MATHia's AI is designed to discern where a student might be struggling, even if the final answer is incorrect. For example, when a student incorrectly determines that ½ x ⅕ is 1, MATHia can help determine if the student understands common denominators or knows the difference between multiplying and adding fractions. Giving students conceptual knowledge of where these procedures come from helps them identify and carry out the correct procedure.

Skillometer: A Tool for Individualized Feedback

Another way MATHia individualizes student feedback is a tool called the Skillometer. In this example, a student must master eight skills to show proficiency at identifying key characteristics of graphs of functions. As students solve problems in the MATHia software, the AI notes their problem-solving preferences and is flexible enough to support them-though it may steer them to a more efficient method if one exists. In this example, Emma and Aiden are in the same Geometry Workspace on transforming figures on the plane. Emma and Aiden are using two different approaches to the same problem.

AI-Powered Reports for Teachers

MATHia's AI is leveraged to develop reports that take some of the burden of time-consuming data collection off teachers’ shoulders. Teachers encounter various situations when students get stuck as they use learning software. Some may seek assistance for minor issues, while others may err on the other side of the spectrum and not request help at all. In Ms. Hernandez’s class, she can use the Teacher Dashboard to see how her students are doing in real-time. Ms. Hernandez also sees that Madonna has a life preserver icon by her status-that means she’s experiencing unproductive struggle and needs help ASAP. She likely won’t master the current skills without the teacher stepping in.

The Adaptive Personalized Learning Score (APLSE) Report is an AI-driven student report containing data you won’t find with any other online math coaching software. The APLSE Report predicts how students will perform on end-of-course assessments. If a student’s APLSE score is 70% or higher, we can safely predict they will pass end-of-course assessments. The State of AI in Education 2025: Key Findings

Carnegie Learning published a report, “The State of AI in Education 2025,” which presents key findings from a national survey of educators. The #1 potential benefit of students using AI was increasing student engagement. On the district administration level, in 2024, 20% of schools/districts had AI policies; in 2025, 40% have them.

One educator reported on his usage of AI as a productivity tool: “Typically, my tasks have been cut by about 10-20%, which is about 5-10 hours per week. AI has helped me with classroom walkthroughs, evaluation, coaching teachers, and creating PD materials for teachers. Instead of manually drafting observation summaries, AI can quickly generate structured, rubric-aligned feedback, allowing more time for coaching and meaningful conversations with teachers.”

The 2025 report on AI in education highlights a pivotal shift: AI is becoming increasingly integrated into K-12 education. Educators are not only growing more comfortable with using it and having their students use it, but overall optimism about AI’s potential is also on the rise. While concerns about cheating and privacy remain, more teachers are instructing students on responsible AI usage, and more districts are providing training and support.

Educators are finding creative ways to integrate AI into their teaching practices.

One teacher shares, "When we are doing our learning targets, sometimes it's hard for me to come up with a kid-friendly version. I use AI all the time," she says. "I use it to create PD. I've used AI in the classroom to create scavenger hunts. You can also do escape rooms using AI. Ms. Delo also uses AI to gamify her lessons with Gibbly. This tool creates quizzes from YouTube videos.

Carnegie Learning has been at the forefront of AI in education for decades. “We were founded on artificial intelligence,” says Carnegie Learning CEO Barry Malkin. “It really is part of the DNA of this organization. Having originated at Carnegie Mellon University, one of the most respected research universities in the country, Carnegie Learning uses research, data and learning science at the core of everything it does.

Founded by cognitive science, computer science and education researchers, they created what was really the first artificial intelligence adaptive learning product for mathematics.

Growth and Expansion

Under Malkin’s leadership, Carnegie Learning has greatly expanded its educational offerings and its reach. After many years as a core mathematics company serving grades six through 12, Carnegie Learning expanded to literacy and languages, becoming one of the country’s largest providers of world language curricula. Recent Carnegie Learning product releases include ClearMath Elementary, the company’s first-ever math program geared toward grades K-5, and a video-based math platform for grades six to 12 called MATHstream, which uses social media influencers as instructors.

The company’s products are used in schools in all 50 states and in Canada. In late 2022, Carnegie Learning recently opened a Canadian headquarters in St. Jacobs, Ontario. All this growth has led to an increase in the workforce from roughly 100 employees to more than 550 just since 2016.

Malkin stressed the importance of having a flat organization - as opposed to traditional management levels, which he sees as an impediment to growth and empowerment. “Even our review process is original and creative,” Malkin says. “Our review process, which we call Make Us Better, is not just simply giving feedback to an employee about how they did. It’s also giving the employee the opportunity to give the company feedback on how we’re doing as an organization.

Carnegie Learning is augmenting its sales and service teams with Salesforce AI. Carnegie Learning consolidated its technology vendors and turned exclusively to Salesforce apps, data, and AI capabilities - including CPQ, Sales Cloud, Service Cloud, Einstein Copilot, and Prompt Builder - to streamline its sales and service operations.

Enhancing the Sales Process

Sales Cloud helps Carnegie Learning representatives optimize daily business operations by providing immediate, data-driven insights. Built-in AI capabilities surface these insights to team members at different stages of the sales process, for example, by automatically scoring leads based on probability of conversion or revenue potential. Sales Cloud also features a customizable, conversational, generative AI assistant to allow Carnegie sales reps to use natural language prompts in the flow of work to generate customized communications.

Transforming Customer Support

Carnegie Learning’s service team has implemented Service Cloud’s AI-driven tools that automatically surface relevant information during live interactions with customers. For example, sharing applicable articles with sales representatives based on similar cases. Implementing Salesforce CPQ, a solution that makes pricing and quoting quick and seamless, dramatically reduced the quoting process timeline from multiple days to just minutes.
