Exploring Housing Options for Valencia College Students

Choosing the right housing is a crucial decision for Valencia College students, impacting their academic performance, social life, and overall college experience. With various campuses and a growing downtown presence, understanding the available housing options is essential. This article explores the different possibilities, from dorm-style living to apartments in surrounding neighborhoods, helping students make informed choices that suit their individual needs and preferences.

Valencia College Downtown Campus Apartments

Valencia College's Downtown Campus is part of the exciting Creative Village development. Students pursuing degrees in Culinary Arts and Hospitality will primarily attend specialized classes at this campus, with the added benefit of opportunities for DirectConnect to the University of Central Florida (UCF) for higher education. Apartments near the Downtown Campus include the UnionWest student-exclusive dormitory, market-rate apartments, and mixed-use apartment communities.

UnionWest Dorms

UnionWest offers dorm-style living in a 15-story building within Creative Village. Managed by Campus Advantage, UnionWest creates an ideal environment for students. The ground floor includes retail spaces and student services offices, while the upper levels feature 4-bedroom dorm-style apartments. These dorms are available to both UCF and Valencia students, with various floor plan layouts that include options for private bathrooms, private kitchenettes, and both single and double-occupancy rooms.

Being within walking distance to Valencia College's Downtown Campus allows students to immerse themselves in the vibrant Creative Village culture. Additionally, students can use financial aid to pay for housing, making it a convenient option. If aid for a term exceeds their direct costs (tuition and fees), it can be used to pay for any educational related costs, including housing. Any remaining charges on the student bill will be refunded to students directly.

However, the cost can be high, and the personal space in these dorms is smaller compared to other housing options. A variety of food options are available on the first floor of UnionWest. Students can grab a bite from on-campus retailers or nearby restaurants, or visit the nearby Publix grocery store. Note that there is not a dining hall in the housing complex.

Students can also work at the Downtown campus as a housing Community Assistant (CA).

Apartments in Creative Village

A number of new apartments in Creative Village offer a variety of floor plans and are located within walking distance of Valencia College's Downtown Campus. These apartments are not classified as student housing, so students will need to find their own roommates if opting for larger floor plans beyond a studio or 1-bedroom.

These apartments offer more space than the dorms and allow residents to experience the dynamic Creative Village area, but since they are not specifically designed as student housing, you'll need to arrange roommate situations yourself.

Housing Near UCF Main Campus

Apartments Near The University of Central Florida (UCF) Main Campus

The area surrounding UCF's main campus boasts dozens of student housing communities offering by-the-bedroom leasing and roommate matching. UCF provides a shuttle service to transport students from the main campus to the new Downtown Campus, making it a viable option for those who only need to attend a few classes at Valencia College's Downtown Campus each week.

Living near UCF offers a student-focused lifestyle with access to UCF's campus amenities, extracurricular activities, and a variety of student programs. Additionally, these apartments tend to offer cheaper rent compared to those closer to the Downtown Campus. However, the commute to Valencia College's Downtown Campus is about a 25-minute drive.

Apartments in Surrounding Neighborhoods

Apartments in neighborhoods surrounding Downtown Orlando, such as Winter Park, College Park, SoDo, Baldwin Park, and Maitland, may also be great options for students. The area is well connected by public transit and is easily walkable, particularly in College Park, which offers a mix of bars, shops, and restaurants. Living in these neighborhoods could offer a more affordable lifestyle with larger floor plans compared to living near the Downtown Campus.
