Several factors were dropped from the 2024 ranking formula by U.S. News & World Report. Alumni giving, class size, high school class standing, faculty with terminal degrees, and the proportion of graduates with federal loans were not considered. Other factors - borrower debt, faculty salaries and financial resources - were modified.

Student Life and Engagement

East Carolina University is a public research university in North Carolina that gives students the chance to participate in cutting-edge research, hybrid online and classroom courses, and hands-on learning. Students are engaged in a wide range of entrepreneurial activities and groups. These include the Gene T. Aman Pirate Challenge (formerly the Pirate Entrepreneurship Challenge), RISE29, Accelerate Rural NC, and the Summer Innovation Academy. ECU students are physically active: some will go to the gym and play basketball after class, and the rec center provides plenty of things to do in terms of working out and swimming. In all, the Pirate Nation loves to hang out and support ECU athletics. After, they'll quite often spend time at home with roommates or find a comedy night or karaoke night at some of the restaurants, bars or breweries downtown. There are plenty of on-campus activities too, like talent shows and game nights.

There are plenty of facilities for students to keep active, with four pools, two recreation centres and several running tracks. The Miller School is based within the Isley Innovation Hub, ECU's 15,000 square-foot campus innovation center. The Hub provides collaborative space, technology labs, makerspace equipment, and design studios to support innovation and new venture creation.

The school's in-state tuition and fees are $7,437; out-of-state tuition and fees are $23,714. Fifty percent of first-year students receive need-based financial aid, and the average net price for federal loan recipients is $16,703.
