East China Normal University: A Comprehensive Overview

East China Normal University (ECNU), located in Shanghai, stands as one of China's most prestigious universities. Founded in October 1951, ECNU is sponsored by the national top university construction programs “Project 211” and “Project 985”. In 2017, it was selected as one of the 36 Class A universities in the Double First Class University Plan by the Chinese central government. Historical Development

ECNU's origins can be traced back to St. John's College, founded in 1879 by William Jones Boone and Joseph Schereschewsky, Bishop of Shanghai. This college was formed by combining two pre-existing Anglican colleges in Shanghai. In 1905, it became St. John's University, registered in Washington D.C., United States. Following the May Thirtieth Movement in 1925, some academics and students departed St. John's, leading to significant changes in the university landscape.

The modern ECNU was officially established in 1951 through the merger of Great China University (est. 1924) and Kwang Hua University (est. 1925). Faculty members from Fudan University, Tongji University, the University of Shanghai, and East China PE Academy also joined ECNU, making it the first national teacher’s training university in the People's Republic of China.

In the 1950s, the Chinese government reorganized higher education institutions to align with a Soviet-style system. Consequently, faculties from Saint John's University, Zhejiang University, the University of Shanghai, Utopia University, and Aurora University were integrated into ECNU, transforming it into a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary university.

ECNU's status as one of the first 16 National Key Universities in China was authenticated in March 1959 and reaffirmed in 1978. In June 1986, it was among the first 33 higher education institutions authorized by the State Council to establish graduate schools. The university became part of "Project 211" in 1996 after passing the prerequisites appraisal. Today, ECNU operates under the direct administration of the Ministry of Education.

ECNU also offers non-credit elective extra-curricular courses like Chinese Martial Arts, Calligraphy, Chinese songs, and Chinese painting.

Direct-Exchange (Visiting Students Program)

For students with advanced Chinese language skills, ECNU offers a Direct-Exchange program. This program requires students to have Chinese proficiency levels equivalent to those of degree students, varying by major. Nomination by the IPO Director is necessary for application.

ECNU hosts a CIEE satellite campus, accommodating 100 American college students each semester. The university also runs an Online College of the Chinese language in collaboration with the National Office for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (NOCFL), serving over 5,800 students in 137 countries and regions.

The university has participated in the United Kingdom (UK) government-funded Study China Programme, offering students from UK institutions the opportunity to study Mandarin Chinese and Chinese culture during the summer months. ECNU has also organized the Diplomats' Program since 2011, sponsored by the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission and Shanghai Foreign Affairs Office.
