A History of Eastern Michigan University Basketball
The Eastern Michigan Eagles men's basketball team proudly represents Eastern Michigan University, located in Ypsilanti, Michigan. The team is a competitor in the Mid-American Conference (MAC). With a record of 3-4, they have made four appearances in the NCAA Division I tournament, which is tied for the third-best record among Michigan colleges. Since joining in 1972, EMU has been a competitor in the MAC, and before that, they were in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (1920-1926).
The Ben Braun Era: A Decade of Dominance
Ben Braun took over as head coach of the EMU men's basketball team in 1985 and remained there until 1996, when he left to become the head coach at the University of California-Berkeley. Braun led Eastern to their most successful decade as an NCAA Division I school during his 10 1/2 seasons as EMU head coach, becoming the winningest head coach in EMU history with a record of 185-132. He was named Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year three times during his tenure (1987-88, 1990-91, 1995-96). The Eagles won Mid-American Conference and MAC tournament championships in each of those three seasons, earning NCAA postseason tournament berths, including a "Sweet 16" appearance in 1990-91.
Coaching Changes and New Directions
In 2001, EMU hired Jim Boone to lead its basketball program. Following the 2005 season, Ypsilanti native and EMU graduate Charles Ramsey was hired. Ramsey's first game as head coach was an upset victory over a Ben Braun-coached California team, but that would be the highlight of his time as head coach in Ypsilanti. Rob Murphy, a Detroit native, was hired in the spring of 2011 to succeed Charles Ramsey. Murphy had previously worked as an assistant coach at Syracuse for seven years under Jim Boeheim. Murphy led the Eagles to a 14-18 record in his first season. The Eagles finished first in the MAC-West with a 9-7 record in conference play.
