Memorizing scripture seems rather old-fashioned, especially now, when everyone has scripture so readily available. All we have to do is pull out our phone and it is all right there. But there is tremendous value in memorizing scripture, in learning passages “by heart,” because the very act of learning something “by heart” can bring it into our hearts. Our brains are quite good at memorizing things - just listen to any young person singing along to their favorite music! So why not use it to the glory of God? Even better, it prepares your mind to deal with issues when they arise.

Memorizing Scripture doesn’t have to be difficult! Here are some tips to make it easier and more effective:
- Start Small: Begin with one or two verses. These 15 Bible verses are proof that Scripture memorization doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Start with one or two, repeat them throughout the day, and allow God’s Word to shape your thoughts and actions.
- Repeat Throughout the Day: Repeat the verses throughout the day.
- Write It Out: Write the verse(s) they’ve chosen to memorize.
- Get Creative: Those who love art may enjoy using art supplies, calligraphy tools, or even an online design site like Canva to create a poster. The girls involved in cheer/dance may love adding (appropriate) choreography to the verse, and the musically inclined might create a song. If they want to make a video of themselves reading, acting out, singing the verse? Great! And if that’s NOT their vibe, that’s okay, too. If quietly writing a verse out on notecards until it sticks is the method that works best for them, that is absolutely fine. And if you have some deep thinkers who love to unpack a verse, dig into its context, and share what they’ve learned. That’s also amazing!
- Share What You've Learned: I’ve found most students do like to share what they’ve learned/created. At the beginning of the weekend, I might say: “Before we leave, I’d love to give you an opportunity to share with the group the verse you chose, why you chose it, and how you went about memorizing it. You absolutely do not HAVE to, but if you want to, we’ll make time for it.”
The Importance of Remembrance
Some of these Bible verses to memorize refer to the larger notion of remembrance in indirect ways too. For example, they might mention a memorial. Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them fade from your heart as long as you live. Their advice might include waking up earlier, drinking lemon water, exercising, and eating a high-protein breakfast. These practices will certainly help your body and brain feel better. But how do you get your soul ready for the day? According to recent studies, around 89% of us check our phones within 10 minutes of waking up, and we reach for our phones an average of 144 times a day. Often, what we’re reaching for is more than information and connection; we’re looking for significance. Friend, if that’s you and you’re searching and scrolling for hope, God’s Word is the only place that will satisfy your longing. Morning routines are great, and I commend one to you, which includes meditating and enjoying God’s Word-but how well you keep one doesn’t define you. How would your outlook change if you reached for God’s Word before your phone? George Müller, the 19th-century champion of orphans in Bristol, England, famously said, “The first great and primary business to which I ought to attend every day is to have my soul happy in the Lord.” Soul happiness is not a one-time achievement; it is a daily pursuit. As our souls’ happiness in the Lord increases, we might push back on the productivity gurus.
Scripture Memorization with Family
Motherhood is flying by. It seems just yesterday I was postpartum-weeping with a fussy newborn in my arms. Now, my oldest is nearly a decade old, which leaves me just 412 Saturdays left with him. (I counted.) Of all the things I hope to accomplish in this brief window of time with my children, at the very top is packing their little minds and hearts full of God’s word. Scripture memorization: it’s not as pressing as deadlines for spring sports, not as glamorous as dance recitals, doesn’t feel as urgent as replacing the shoes that are too-tight and worn down. And yet. What will never change? God’s Word. What brings hope in the dark times to come? God’s Word. What is a guide when you’re lost, a friend when you’re lonely, a rock when you’re shaken? God’s Word. The habit of Scripture memorization with your kids is one of the very best traditions to start in the family! Keep in mind that young children are capable of memorizing much more than we think!
