Universal Studios Orlando: A Comprehensive Restaurant Guide

Universal Orlando Resort is more than just thrilling rides and immersive experiences; it's also a culinary destination with a diverse range of dining options. From themed restaurants to quick-service locations, there's something to satisfy every palate and budget. This guide explores some of the best places to eat at Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure, and CityWalk, offering a mix of personal recommendations and popular favorites.

Planning Your Culinary Adventure

With so many food and beverage locations across Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure, and Universal CityWalk, it's nearly impossible to experience everything in a single trip. To make the most of your dining experience, consider these tips:

  • Reservations: Table-service restaurants are popular and often book up in advance. Make reservations online or by calling Universal at (407) 224-3663.
  • Mobile Ordering: Many quick-service locations offer mobile ordering via the Universal Orlando app, allowing you to pre-order food and pick it up, saving time and avoiding long lines.
  • Dietary Needs: Inform the restaurant of any dietary needs or allergies when booking your reservation and upon arrival.
  • Tipping: Gratuities are customary at table-service restaurants in the United States.

Quick Bites and Themed Treats

For those on a budget or looking for a quick and convenient meal, Universal Orlando offers a variety of casual and counter-service options:

Bumblebee Man’s Taco Truck

Located in Springfield, this food truck serves up some of the best Mexican street food Springfield’s ever tasted. Each plate comes with two tacos and a side of chips and salsa (green or red). For a lighter option, ask for the corn tortilla option.

Frozen Butterbeer

A must-have staple for any "Harry Potter" fan, Frozen Butterbeer is a refreshing beverage that allows you to relive iconic moments from the films. It can be found in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at The Hopping Pot, Leaky Cauldron, The Fountain of Fair Fortune, and select Butterbeer carts. The lightly carbonated, non-alcoholic drink tastes like a buttery, caramel-heavy cream soda with a creamy foam on top. While the cold version is a classic, a frozen Butterbeer is incredibly refreshing on a hot day.

Green Eggs and Ham Tots

This fun, quick, and perfectly-themed meal is a fan favorite, immersing you in the world of Dr. Seuss's "Green Eggs and Ham."

Cinnabon at Port of Entry

A perfect way to start the day, Cinnabon offers a variety of cinnamon rolls, but the Center of the Roll is a standout. It's like being engulfed in a warm cinnamon hug as the soft dough melts in your mouth.

Moose Juice and Goose Juice

Located in Seuss Landing, this walk-up snack and beverage station offers frozen non-alcoholic drinks. Moose Juice is orange-colored and flavored, while Goose Juice is green-colored with a sour-green apple flavor.

Big Pink Donut at Lard Lad Donuts

Located in the Simpson's area, it's hard to miss the towering statue of Lard Lad, holding his giant donut high in the air. The iconic Big Pink donut is easily the size of four normal donuts and is large enough that you should probably hold it with both hands for stability. It's got an impressive amount of pink glaze on it, and the donut itself is tender, fluffy, and fried until perfectly golden - just like Homer likes it. Be advised that the pink glaze is not strawberry-flavored but vanilla.

Cauldron Cake

Sweet shops throughout the Universal Parks sell prepackaged candy and chocolates, like chocolate frogs and Bertie Bott's Every-Flavour Beans. But you'll need to go up to the counter to order a Cauldron Cake - a chocolate cake baked into a handheld silicone cauldron and topped with fiery red, orange, and yellow buttercream frosting.

Butterbeer Ice Cream

Not all Butterbeer is for drinking - some versions of it can also be eaten. The Wizarding World's ice cream shop sells both soft serve and traditional "hard pack" ice creams in a variety of familiar, creative, and British-inspired flavors. The Butterbeer ice cream is one of the soft serve flavors, piped into a large waffle cone (or a cup for those of us trying to avoid sticky hands), and has a butterscotch ribbon on the outside edge of the soft serve.

Central Park Crêpes

Central Park Crêpes is one of the most elusive snack spots in Universal Studios, since it operates more like a pop-up snack station and isn't listed in the Universal app or maps. Located across from Mel's Drive-In restaurant, the little green art nouveau-style hut usually sells three or four different types of crêpes with a little bit of European flair; typically one or two savory and two sweet. Hours are now listed on the Universal Orlando app making it much easier to plan a visit. Central Park Crepes offer sweet and savory crepes. These are made to order so give yourself a little time for them to prepare.

London Taxi Hut

The London Taxi Hut is not always on the Universal app but it is a baked potato quick service dining kiosk that offers plain potatoes and loaded potato options.

Voodoo Doughnut

Located at Universal's City Walk. Voodoo Doughnuts has all the usual components, including crispy tortillas, queso, pinto stew beans, shredded cheese, tomato salsa, sour cream, and guacamole. You have the choice of enjoying your nachos topped with chicken tinga or beef machaca - and while I typically opt for the chicken tinga, you can also very nicely ask your server if it's possible to have both.

Sit-Down Dining Experiences

For a more relaxed and immersive dining experience, Universal Orlando boasts a variety of themed restaurants:

Leaky Cauldron

Located inside Diagon Alley in Universal Studios, Leaky Cauldron is a must-visit for Harry Potter fans. This rustic pub is an exact replica of that found in the Harry Potter movies. Leaky Cauldron has an impressive selection of breakfast items to choose from. The restaurant also offers hearty meals.

Three Broomsticks

This Harry Potter-themed restaurant can be found in Universal’s second park, Islands of Adventure. This restaurant offers hearty meals such as fish and chips, rotisserie smoked chicken with corn on the cob, chicken and ribs, and smoked turkey legs, as well as salads and a children’s menu. At Three Broomsticks you can order the great feast platter that serves four and includes a garden salad, rotisserie smoked chicken & spareribs, corn on the cob, and roast potatoes. They also offer Chicken Fingers, Chicken Legs, Mac & Cheese, and Fish & Chips on the kids menu. Tip: If you want to try Butterbeer order it here. I always get the Fish & Chips. If you want less food consider ordering the kids Fish & Chips. That is what I typically do during a day at the parks.

Confisco Grille

Confisco Grille has a bunch of budget-friendly items to choose from on their appetizer menu, including ahi tuna nachos and chicken wings. However, this Asian-inspired lettuce wrap dish is one of my favorites. It is healthy with a nice combination of protein and veggies, yet super filling and doubles as a whole course on its own. The platter comes deconstructed and you can use the fresh bibb lettuce cups to build your wraps. Another go-to meal on my list would be this hearty platter. The dish comes with a slow-roasted spiced chicken quarter that’s super flavorful and juicy, fresh corn on the cob, and roasted potatoes.

Thunder Falls Terrace

Located in the Jurassic Park area of Islands of Adventure. They offer rotisserie chicken and rice bowls. The black beans here were so good with the rice. We all were really impressed. The portions are huge! It is definitely a place you can share. Ravenous barbecue lovers should make their way to Thunder Falls Terrace in the Jurassic Park area of Islands of Adventure on their next visit. I'm a fan of the Roasted Pernil Platter, which includes juicy and perfectly seasoned pulled pork, along with black beans, sofrito rice, and sweet plantains. My partner can't resist the Chargrilled Ribs Combo, which comes with mango BBQ sauce, roasted corn and potatoes, and a milkshake. But don't worry - if you can't decide which meat you want, you can also get mixed combos and platters, which include at least two meat options with sides.

Minions Cafe

Minions Cafe is so much fun! There are Minion shaped tots and the restaurant is so fun to dine at. Don’t be scared off by the menu names. They sound complicated but they are not. The Salmon I ordered was basically salmon, rice, and vegetables. Order the Minion tots to share if you order doesn’t include them. Much like the somewhat gibberish language the Minions speak with words and slang sprinkled in from around the world, the dishes at Minions Cafe mash up a whole slew of different cuisines. I've yet to taste anything I didn't enjoy from the Minions Cafe menu, but the dish I keep going back to the most is El Macho's Salsa y Salsa Ropa Vieja, which includes braised beef with tomato cucumber salad, cilantro rice, salsa roja, and tostones that have been mashed and branded with a little El Macho M on them.

Mel’s Drive-In

Mel’s Drive-In is a 50s retro diner located in Universal Orlando Resort, along the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the Beverly Hills section of the park. This restaurant is for old-fashioned cars and diners. I recommend ordering the BBQ brisket burger platter. This brisket burger is stacked with smoked gouda and golden BBQ and is topped off with a large onion ring. My brother and I shared this item. However, after realizing how good it tasted, I wished I had ordered an entire burger for myself. Make sure you do not miss out on this amazing burger while visiting Universal! Mel’s Drive-In recently received a menu update. It has a delicious Cobb Salad and Burger options in this 50’s themed diner.

Antojitos

If you’re a fan of Mexican food, you must check out Antojitos at the CityWalk. This lively Mexican restaurant serves a gigantic bowl of complimentary chips and salsa and has a wide variety of Mexican foods to choose from. Additionally, the restaurant has live music on select nights! On our first visit to Antojitos I had the best burrito ever. On our next visit it wasn’t my favorite. We tried it a third time and it was delicious! Chips and Salsa are included with your meal and the fresh salsa was delicious. Kids options are quesadillas, grilled chicken, or tacos.

Toothsome Chocolate Emporium & Savory Feast Kitchen

Toothsome Chocolate Emporium is a fun themed restaurant at Universal Orlando. Toothsome’s has unique dining options inspired by chocolate flavors. If you are planning on dining at Toothsome I highly suggest making a reservation and allotting 1.5-2 hours for your visit. I loved the warm chocolate bread and the milkshakes are delicious. The menu has a lot of chocolate infused dishes and reservations are highly recommended. The Toothsome Chocolate Emporium looks like it is straight out of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I felt like I had won a golden ticket when we stepped into the restaurant. Not only are there 13 different flavor options currently on the menu, but each of the milkshakes is essentially topped with another dessert. I chose to go with the Heavenly Hazelnut shake, which was made of Nutella® ice cream, hazelnuts, Nutella®, cocoa powder, and fresh whipped cream. The name Heavenly Hazelnut was definitely on-brand, as I felt like I had entered Heaven itself when I took my first sip. If you want to splurge on a dessert in Universal CityWalk, this is the place to do it. I cannot forget to mention you also get to keep the cup the milkshake comes in as a souvenir. It’s really a win-win situation.

Chez Alcatraz

Located on the dock overlooking the lagoon, Chez Alcatraz is recognizable by the life-sized great white shark from "Jaws" strung up beside the bar. According to the bartenders at the walk-up bar, the Ocean Attack cocktail is by far the most popular, and it's not hard to see why.

Pat O’Brien’s

Pat O’Brien’s is a New Orleans themed restaurant. It is a sit-down restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating. Expect Cajun inspired meals, that can be on the spicy side. They also offer a kids menu. If you love spicy food Pat O’Briens is a good choice.

Hard Rock Café

Lastly, the Hard Rock Café is a widely recognized restaurant across the world. We decided to eat here our last night since we were each craving a specific pasta on the menu. We had worked up quite the appetite that day, and we knew the Hard Rock would not disappoint. I enjoyed eating here because it gave us a beautiful view of the restaurants and palm trees situated on the other side of the lake.

Unique and Themed Drinks

Flaming Moe

According to lore, the Flaming Moe is a cocktail made with a mix of liquors and laced with cough syrup, before getting lit on fire. The real-life version of the Flaming Moe, served at Flaming Moe's in the Simpson's neighborhood in Universal Studios, is not made with cough syrup (nor does it contain any alcohol). Instead, it's more like an orange soda, served in a souvenir cup with dry ice on the bottom, causing the drink to smoke and bubble.

Hog's Head Brews

Beer enthusiasts (along with anyone looking for a break from the sweeter cocktails) have a lot to look forward to at Universal Studios. Some of the most impressive offerings you'll find are sold exclusively at the Hog's Head in the Hogsmeade Village side of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. The three regular beers in the bar's lineup include the Hog's Head red ale, the Dragon Scale amber lager, and the Wizard's Brew dark coffee stout, exclusive to the Hog's Head.

Beyond the Parks: Universal CityWalk

The Universal CityWalk is located directly outside Universal Orlando Resort. This area comprises lots of themed restaurants, food stands, and dessert shops. There is no admission fee to get into the CityWalk area, and the area stays open late. Walking around Universal CityWalk at night is a fun and lively experience, as well as a great way to end each day at Universal.
