Admission to the Honors College

The Honors College at East Carolina University extends invitations for admission to prospective students based on their academic achievements. The application process is competitive, with a team of faculty members reviewing and scoring applications. The top-scoring applicants are then invited to join the college.

Application Deadlines

October 15, 2025: Deadline for submitting the completed application for undergraduate admission to East Carolina University to be eligible for an invitation to the Honors College. A completed application includes high school transcripts (and test scores if you opted to have them considered on your ECU admissions application as well as community college transcripts if you’re dually enrolled). Note: SAT & ACT scores are not required for Honors College eligibility but may be submitted to meet minimum Honors College requirements. The last test dates that students should utilize if they plan to become honors eligible via test scores is Aug. 24th for SAT or Sept.
December 2, 2025: Honors College application deadline for invited students.

Application Process

A prospective candidate must complete two steps in the application process. First, the ECU undergraduate application for freshman admission must be completed by the priority deadline. Second, if a student qualifies for the Honors College, then an invitation to apply to the Honors College will be sent to the student. The Honors College application includes two additional sections: the Brinkley-Lane Scholars application and the Early Assurance Programs application.

To maximize your chances of acceptance, it is recommended to start working on your application promptly.

Transfer Students

The Honors College at East Carolina University welcomes a limited number of transfer students, accepting approximately 10 each year. To be considered for admission, transfer students must:

Submit a completed application for undergraduate transfer admission to East Carolina University by February 13, 2026, through the ECU Navigator portal.
The last institution attended must be a N.C. Community College.
The deadline for submitting the completed Honors College application and all associated materials is March 20, 2026.

Honors College Curriculum Requirements

As an Honors College student, you are required to complete a set of Honors courses prior to graduation. The majority of these credits count towards general education requirements, meaning they will count toward both your degree and Honors College requirements.

Colloquia

All Honors College freshmen are enrolled in a colloquium with a specific theme centered around the Honors College ideals of leadership and service.

Seminars

Seminars are interdisciplinary courses that allow students to pursue a variety of interesting topics in a discussion-based setting. Seminars count for Honors credit, and many will also satisfy general education credit. All Honors College students are required to complete one seminar at any time during their undergraduate career. Top faculty propose unique and interesting topics, and the best are chosen as seminar offerings for our students.

Examples of Seminars:

Wine and Craft Brewing Industries: Students will be responsible for learning how to do economic analysis as it relates to both the wine and craft brewing industries. Students will use supply and demand analysis to promote their understanding of both of these industries. Students will become familiar with production, distribution, and consumption of wine and beer, and the current issues driving these industries. Students will learn how to conduct research as it relates to the wine and beer industry, collecting data and formulating questions and hypotheses. wine and beer industry’s place in the world supply. Oceans and History: This course will focus on the role oceans play in shaping our history. From controlling climate to determining political borders, oceans are constantly influencing our political, social, and cultural life. Subjects such as piracy, trade, naval warfare, exploitation and preservation of the oceans, and underwater archaeology will be discussed during the course of the semester. Faculty: Dr.

Signature Honors Project

Students are asked to develop their own thesis or creative portfolio and present their research through the Signature Honors Project. This can be done at any point prior to graduation.

Note: Some majors (like nursing) may require a different sequence for honors courses.

By being eligible for the Honors College, you are eligible for each and every one of our special programs. Applying to the Honors College also qualifies you for these special programs.

Early Assurance Program in Medicine

The Early Assurance Program in Medicine is a program offered jointly by the Honors College and the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University for North Carolina residents. The program is directed at prospective students who are interested in medical school after they complete their undergraduate degrees.

This program guarantees your entry into the Brody School of Medicine upon completion of your undergraduate degree and Honors College academic requirements. Each year, four incoming Honors College students are selected for this program, and an additional four students are identified as alternates. Early Assurance will be open only to students currently enrolled and in good standing in ECU’s Honors College.

Note: Students must apply to and be offered admission into the Brody School of Medicine’s Early Assurance program. Receiving an offer does not obligate a student to accept.

By the end of fall semester of the second year, students who wish to apply for Early Assurance in Medicine must meet the following criteria: Students who accept a position in the Early Assurance program must maintain certain academic standards and participate in various activities to remain eligible for their guaranteed seats in the entering class. Minimum 8 credit hours of Biology, preferably advanced level Biology coursework beyond General/Introductory Biology at ECU, not including AP credits and/or Dual Enrollment Community College credits. EAM students may elect to defer one year following their accepted cohort.

Brinkley-Lane Scholars Program

The Brinkley-Lane Scholars Award is the most prestigious scholarship offered at East Carolina University. Every year on President’s Day Weekend, 50 finalists are invited to interview for Brinkley-Lane Scholars on Selection Sunday. Selection Sunday brings together current Scholars, alumni, faculty, and staff from across ECU to select the newest cohort of students, while showcasing the experiences students have had over the last year.

All Brinkley-Lane Scholars must live in the Honors College dorm, Greene Residence Hall for the first year. In subsequent years, Brinkley-Lane Scholars may remain in the Honors College residence hall or choose alternate housing wherever they choose.

Brinkley-Lane Scholars are required to participate in a semester or summer Study Abroad program. Brinkley-Lane Scholars are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity during their sophomore or junior year. The Brinkley-Lane Scholar Program allows its students to receive scholarships from other programs, and scholarships may be stacked up to the “cost of attendance”.

Yes. All Honors College students are required to live in the Honors College residence hall, Greene Hall, for the first year. In subsequent years, Honors College students may remain in the Honors College residence hall or choose alternate housing.

Is the Honors College application binding?

No, the Honors College application is not binding in any way. If you apply to the Honors College, you are not required to come to ECU or the Honors College. Completing the Honors College application is not binding.

ECUAWard

The Honors College application is housed in ECU’s scholarship portal, ECUAWard. Log into ECUAWard, using your Pirate ID and passphrase. Complete the general ECU scholarship application so you can be considered for the array of scholarship opportunities available to incoming students across the university. After completing the general application, the Honors College application will become available to you in the system. Open and complete the Honors College application, including the sections for the Brinkley-Lane Scholars Program and the eligible Early Assurance Programs.
