Introduction

Education is Freedom (EIF) is a leading non-profit organization dedicated to transforming the lives of disadvantaged youth by guiding them to postsecondary opportunities and careers. Founded on the principle that every young person deserves the opportunity to pursue a higher education, the program promotes responsibility, academic excellence, and discipline. EIF strives to have a positive impact on the success of urban youth and their pursuit of a higher education through a two-tiered program targeted at high school and college students.

The Genesis of Education is Freedom

Education is Freedom (EIF) was founded in 2002 with the creation of a dynamic board of corporate leaders who envisioned a world where every young person could pursue a college education. As business leaders, government officials and entrepreneurs, EIF’s board was and is committed to creating an educated workforce that could build effective companies and strong communities in today’s knowledge-based economy. To accomplish this, EIF first offered renewable scholarships to first-time college students. This program quickly revealed that financial support alone was insufficient to ensure college success, especially for students with other profound social or economic barriers.

In 2003, EIF launched a comprehensive, school-based program aimed at increasing the college-going orientation and readiness of students in the Dallas Independent School District.

Programs and Initiatives

EIF’s impact is realized through a blend of programs aimed at preparing students for college and supporting them through their post-secondary journey. The organization recognizes that financial aid is only one piece of the puzzle, and its initiatives address a range of needs to ensure student success.

High School Program

The EIF High School program operates on 13 DISD high school campuses and is open to all students. Securing financial assistance for college Education is Freedom (EIF) places Higher Education Advisors in traditionally underserved high schools to assist students with college, career, and life readiness.

College Persistence Program

The College Persistence Program operates at the University of North Texas and has closed enrollment. Through our EIF Scholars program, students receive monthly mentorship and personal development opportunities designed to prepare them for life after high school and ensure their post-secondary success. Eligible students must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and demonstrate leadership, character, and drive.

Higher Education Advisors (HEAs)

Higher Education Advisors (HEAs) come from a variety of college backgrounds, with degrees ranging from bachelor’s to doctorate. Many are near-peer, meaning they are recent college graduates, they mirror the school’s student demographics (including multilingual capabilities), and they possess a wealth of cultural acumen. HEAs go through intensive training before and during each school year to ensure they are fully equipped with the tools they need to assist students as they explore college and career options after graduation. Full-time HEAs are dedicated to one campus for the entire school year and are in their classroom throughout the school day to assist all students with activities related to their future education. In addition to daily student interaction and guidance, HEAs facilitate all student and parent activities throughout the year, such as college application and SAT/ACT preparatory workshops.

Career Advising Services

EIF also supports workforce development through our growing career advising services. Our career advising for high school students includes assistance for those who intend to go directly to work after graduation or who are uncertain about their post-secondary plans.

EIF Scholars Program

Through our EIF Scholars program, students receive monthly mentorship and personal development opportunities designed to prepare them for life after high school and ensure their post-secondary success. Eligible students must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and demonstrate leadership, character, and drive.

Scholarship Opportunities

Join us in providing scholarships to graduating high school seniors transitioning to college to help them cover expenses not typically covered by financial aid. Needs Scholarships ($500+) for Graduating Dallas County High School Seniors: 100% of the funds raised during North Texas Giving Day will go directly toward scholarships for graduating high school seniors in Dallas County public schools. EIF Scholarships provide students with the flexibility to use their awards for any expenses that will help them successfully transition to college, such as moving costs, textbooks, and supplies.

College Readiness and Access in Dallas

EIF actively promotes college readiness and access through various events and collaborations with local universities. These initiatives aim to provide students with comprehensive information about higher education opportunities and the application process.
