Whether students are aspiring educators, researchers, policymakers, business leaders, parents, or simply engaged citizens, the Education minor provides a valuable foundation for understanding and addressing the challenges and opportunities within the field of education.

Who Should Consider the Education Minor?

The UC Davis School of Education extends a warm welcome to students from all academic disciplines. The Education minor is particularly beneficial for those who anticipate encountering educational issues in their future careers or who simply wish to deepen their understanding of the educational system. UC Davis students who minor in Education become part of a growing community of leaders in education.

Declaring the Education Minor

Undergraduate students planning to declare a minor must complete the Minor Declaration form. After approval has been obtained from all minor, major, and college advisors, the intent to complete the minor will be recorded in your student record. However, submitting the declaration does not automatically mean that the minor will be awarded. Students are still required to satisfactorily complete all coursework for the minor(s), and ensure they comply with all minor requirements.

Important Considerations for Minor Declaration

  • A minor typically consists of 18 to 24 upper division units in courses specified by the department or program offering the minor.
  • Courses taken elsewhere, must be approved by an advisor in the sponsoring department or program.
  • Transfer units will not normally be used to satisfy minor requirements.
  • No more than one course applied to the satisfaction of requirements in the major program shall be accepted in satisfaction of the requirements of a minor.
  • Students in the College of Biological Sciences may not complete a minor in the same field as the student's major. This includes any minor offered by the department or curriculum committee in charge of the student's major.
  • With the exception of interdisciplinary minors approved by the College Executive Committee, students in the College of Letters and Science may not complete a minor offered by the department or program in charge of the student's major.
  • The College of Letters and Science (L&S) allows students to declare their intent to pursue a minor in the College as long as they have a 2.00 or greater GPA in the upper division Letters and Science course(s) they have completed toward that minor.
  • Students submitting L&S minor declarations early must include the courses they plan to complete in fulfillment of the minor requirements. Courses listed on the declaration must match the approved minor curriculum in the General Catalog. Any courses listed toward the minor that are not included in the approved curriculum may result in the minor being denied at graduation. It is the student’s responsibility to confirm with their minor advisor that all course options included on the declaration will satisfy the minor requirements.

Education Minor Requirements at UC Davis

To successfully complete the Education minor, students must fulfill specific requirements, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the field.

Unit Requirements

Students must complete a minimum of 20 units in the Education minor program. At least 12 of these units must be specifically in Education courses. The remaining units can be fulfilled through additional education courses or related fields, subject to approval by a designated faculty member in the School of Education. This advisor provides guidance and final approval on the minor course selection.

Course Substitutions

In certain cases, course substitutions are permitted. Specifically:

  • EDU 181 and EDU 183 (4 units) or AED 100 (3 units) may serve as course substitutes for EDU 100.
  • However, if EDU 100 is taken, EDU 181, EDU 183, and/or AED 100 may not be taken as electives.

Restrictions on Internship and Independent Study Units

To maintain a balance between structured coursework and experiential learning, there are limitations on the number of units that can be earned through internships and independent study. Internship (192, 195A or B, 195TC, 197TC), Group Study (198) and Independent Study (199), or a combination of both, may not exceed a total of 4 units.

Submission and Approval

For the minor to be officially awarded, the OASIS Minor Declaration Form must be approved prior to graduation. This form will only be approved once the student is enrolled in the final course required for the minor.

Grading Policy

All core courses must be completed with a letter grade, with the exception of SPH 190, which offers a Pass/No Pass (P/NP) grade option. Elective courses can be taken for a letter grade or P/NP. Only one lower division course can be used.

GPA Requirement

To complete the minor, students must complete a minimum of 20 units of coursework in the minor with a GPA of 2.000 or better.
